ava Joint teams with Pampered Guests for a tasty new menu
By Stacey Powells Mammoth Times Staff Writer
photos by stacey powells Put a woman in the kitchen and who knows what will happen? Put four women in a kitchen and the results are delicious. Stephanie Stanton, Riki Barbor, Karen Kasten and Lynne Blanche. Karen Kasten, owner of the Java Joint, has added a little more panache, pizzazz and pampering to her menu. A little handwritten sign in her window stating “space-for-rent” led to three Mammoth Lakes women who know their way around the kitchen moving in, rolling up their sleeves and creating delicious lunch and dinner selections. Stephanie Stanton loves to bake. Lynne Blanche has been making delicious meals through her Pampered Guests Services business and Riki Barbo has been doing the kitchen scramble since she was 16. Put all three together and the recipe for culinary stars is a no-brainer. “I worked at the Century Plaza hotel in the 70’s and at the Tony Roma Corporation for years, so I know my way around the food and beverage business,” Barbo said. “This type of business will be a first for me, but I can’t wait. It’s going to be great.” Here in Mammoth, Barbo ran a babysitting service, but now she’s putting as much time as she can into reworking the Java Joint menu.
Blanche has been catering special dinners and events around town for several years and is introducing dishes into the Java Joint kitchen such as a slow-roasted Turkey Breast with her unique pesto, cranberry spread and the Juicy Tri Tip sandwich with a spicy mayo vinaigrette. Heated with a slice of provolone and it melts in the mouth. Stanton’s specialty will be fresh-baked goods, such as double chocolate cookies and pumpkin pie, which can either be taken back to the office for that four o’clock sweet tooth craving or as a compliment their “Dinners-to-Go” menu. “When visitors come into town and it’s too crowded at the grocery store, or mom and dad are just too tired from working to cook, they can come in here and we’ll have everything ready for them to heat up at home,” Blanche said. “This will be a one-stopper for a great, healthy dinner.” She will also be using the Java Joint kitchen to carry on her catering activities through Pampered Guest Services. The menu at the Java Joint will continue to evolve since the idea is to have a seasonal menu, including daily hot soup specials. “We will have a basic menu, but it will change with the seasons,” Blanche said. “It also depends on what the customers want to eat. We are very open to adding new things to the menu or taking away something that isn’t very popular.” “The Java Joint is a great place to come and eat and relax,” Barbo declared. “We just came in and gave it a little rejuvenation.” Of course the Joint still has its varied selection of crepes, terrific smoothies and coffee all day long. The Java Joint has free WiFi and thousands of DVDs and videos for rent, as well as a book exchange program. Open at 7:30 a.m. during weekdays and at 8 a.m. on weekends, they will extend their evening hours after the shoulder season. For more information call the Java Joint at (760) 924-3629 or e-mail
