If people were to canvass the two artists at Bluebird Imaging, they’d discover that Kendra Knight and Aaron Horowitz are wild about canvas.
“The appeal to me would be that it looks more painterly,” said Knight, half of the husband-and-wife team. Together, they dazzled shoppers at last week’s Labor Day Festival of the Arts with photographs printed on canvas, then stretched on a 3-D display board.

A former Mammoth Unified School District student and the son of Mammoth Dog Team’s Jim Ouimet is a suspect in a double homicide in Sparks, Nev, following the stabbing deaths of a two-year-old boy and the boy’s 62-year-old grandmother on Friday, Sept. 17.
Justin Ouimet, 24, was arrested by the Sparks Police officers in the community of Hidden Valley on Saturday, Sept. 18, on charges of attempted burglary and traffic charges, after an investigation pointed to him as a possible suspect.

It doesn’t take a physics professor to tell you that the two-day Everest Challenge bike race attracts an odd set of cyclists.
“There’s something about the human spirit that makes us wonder exactly what we can do,” said race director Steven Barnes, who happens to be an adjunct professor of physics at Cal State-San Bernardino. “This race is out there, pretty close to the limits.”

If you’re a distance runner in Mammoth, chances are you’re already working the outer fringes of sanity, but then there are some events that go beyond that, such as tomorrow’s Moeben Ultra 50K and 25K races in the Mammoth Mountain Bike Park.
Organized by Andrew Kastor and Elaine Smith of the High Sierra Striders, the race begins at the crack of morning, 6:30 a.m., and the runners hope to clear the first part of the race on top of Mammoth Mountain by 11 o’clock. It is shaping up to be quite a challenge for everyone.

The Mammoth Huskies have had a week to lick their wounds, daub their eyes and otherwise try to recover from last week’s 27-0 debacle against Mission College Prep of San Luis Obispo.
At the same time, Head Coach Tom Gault’s coaching staff has two weeks to try to recalibrate last week’s sucky offense and out-of-kilter defense. Whether any of their work pays off will be revealed next Friday night, when the Calvary Murietta Warriors (0-1) come calling at Gault-McClure Stadium.
Rangers in Yosemite National Park said they found and rescued a lost backpacker earlier this month after spotting a makeshift SOS message on the ground.
Rangers picked him up on Saturday, Sept 11, after Mike Arends had spent three unexpected days and nights in the wilnerness near the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne.
An experienced hiker, Arends' self-preservations techniques were just about perfect, and serve as a kind of a blueprint for hikers who stray into the unknown.
'Tis the season for fattening up

On our calendar, we see the Millpond Music Festival is coming up this weekend, signaling either the end of summer or the beginning of fall.
Whatever. One thing is for certain: the fall shoulder season is here, and all around us, everyone is fattening up.
The bears are getting more plump, for sure, and as they lumber through the town, they no doubt notice with disheartening alarm that the sloppy visitors are gone and the dumpsters are secure again. Bummer for them, we suppose.
Bike shops are turning into ski shops. Around here, that’s like aspens turning. Time is getting short.
