A 24-year-old Mammoth Lakes resident was booked on charges of attempted murder Tuesday, after a wild, confusing episode in the town’s “Ghetto” neighborhood.
Jonathon Anderson also was charged with felony domestic violence, parole violation, resisting arrest and destroying a cell phone when used to make an emergency call.
Anderson, who was pulled from under the victim’s bed during the arrest, is behing held without bail at the Mono County Jail in Bridgeport.
Gloppy weather continued in Mammoth on Tuesday, but in mid-afternoon, bright stabs of sunshine burst through the rain- and snow-sodden skies.
Despite the afternoon sun, the National Weather Service wasn't buying it.
For the rest of the afternoon and early evening, forecasters at the weather service predicted more snow. Some thunder is also possible. High near 38. Northeast wind around 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

UPDATED 3 p.m. Monday. The "Granite Curtain" descended in the High Sierra Monday, when snow, wind and general "inclement weather" forced Caltrans to close both Tioga Pass (S.R. 120) and Sonora Pass (S.R. 108).
Forecasters predicted four to eight 4 to 8 inches of snow are possible in the Sierra above 8,500 feet through Tuesday morning.
Snow levels near 11,000 feet will drop to near 9,000 feet later today and fall near 8,000 feet late tonight.
Snow may affect the higher passes along U.S. 395 tonight in Mono county but accumulations are unlikely to occur.

There might be worse places to crash a paraglider, but it’s hard to imagine.
A 37-year-old Santa Cruz man on Monday evening went down two miles west of the White Mountain Research Station’s Barcroft Laboratory near Barcroft Peak, breaking his back and lying in the darkness – helpless in steep, rocky, unforgiving terrain.
“Fortunately he didn’t land in a rock ditch or in a cliff band or truly challenging terrain,” said Jeff Holmquist, a member of the rescue team.
“We caught a huge break because of that, and obviously, so did he.”

If there’s one thing that gets the goat of Crowley Lakers, it’s when a bear gets their goat.
About a dozen people showed up at Wednesday’s meeting of the Long Valley Regional Planning Advisory Committee to hear Steve Searles’ take on a bear assault on a pygmy goat on July 31.
For Crowley Lake residents, who usually don’t have to deal with bears, the mauling of the goat was a strange and gruesome event, and Searles acknowledged that the bear had “crossed the line.”
He said if he had been there, and if he had jurisdictional authority (he doesn’t), “I’d have shot the bear.”
Maybe Dave McCoy didn’t know what he was getting into when he signed up for a Facebook account. Within days, Dave had 550 friends, forcing him and his assistant, Brandon Russell, to do some serious gardening to his account. ...

A proposal Wednesday to amend the troubled Eastern Sierra Unified School District’s superintendent’s employment contract met with resistance from two board members, but passed on a 3-2 vote.
The amendment was created to settle a “dispute” that arose when at least one member of the school board, Doug Northington, said he was concerned about how Superintendent Don Clark’s vacation days were being paid out to Clark.

Mammoth Mountain Ski Area on Wednesday announced winter air schedules and fares, including the new flight to and from San Francisco International.
The flights, to and from San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Jose and Portland, begin Dec. 16, according to a news release Tuesday from Mammoth Mountain Ski Area.
United Airlines will offer nonstop service from San Francisco International to Mammoth Yosemite Airport. Flights will be operated by United Express carrier SkyWest Airlines, using 66-seat CRJ700 regional jets. Flights start at $188 round-trip.

Mammoth’s merchants, hoteliers and restaurateurs may have varying opinions on the success of their summers, but the town government is calling Summer 2010 a winner.
Judging by the latest Transient Occupancy Tax figures, July 2010 was the biggest July in town history, according to Brad Koehn, the town’s finance director.
“It’s the best July we’ve ever had in terms of TOT collections, and this only reflects the monthly remittances,” he said. “There are other condo owners who remit quarterly, so this will continue to grow.”
From Oct. 4, 2010 through Nov. 7, 2010, Lake Mary Road (3S10) will be temporarily closed to all access from the northern intersection with the Twin Lakes Loop Road (4S22) to the southern intersection with Twin Lakes Loop Road. Access to the Lakes Basin will still be available by either Old Mammoth Road (4S19) or Twin Lakes Loop Road.
Starting in early October mem-bers of the Mammoth Lakes Fire Department and Cal-Fire crews will be doing a large fuel reduction project in the Shady Rest parcel, Chief Brent Harper announced in a press release Tuesday.
This approximately 25-acre parcel is located in the general area south of Center Street and east of Manzanita Drive.
The green fairways of the Sierra Star Golf Course are, at last, truly green. And purple.
This past week, the golf course completed a long-term project to use recycled water from the Mammoth Community Water District to irrigate the turf at the golf course.
Purple is the universal color identifying facilities that contain or are using recycled water. These purple pipes and sprinkler heads can now be seen at Sierra.
Eastern Sierra Land Trust is calling all interested people to apply to be part of the Sierra Nevada AmeriCorps Partnership (SNAP) based in Bishop, Calif. The SNAP program places 27 AmeriCorps members at different conservation agencies and organizations throughout the Sierra Nevada to conduct watershed restoration and monitoring, watershed education, and volunteer recruitment and support.
ESLT is seeking enthusiastic conservation-minded people to devote a year to to the preservation of Eastern Sierra natural resources and sustainable communities.
