Greg Stump’s “Legend of Aahhh’s” is a ski movie about ski movies, the people who made them and those who skied in them.

It will be screened at the Mammoth Lakes Arts Center Saturday night, March 12.

The Old West will meet the new frontier of guitar-driven live music; tradition will collide with innovation; and familiarity will make way for ground-breaking entertainment as one of the Eastern Sierra’s most popular fund raisers returns to Lone Pine.

The ski bum is dead, long live the ski bum

October 1, 2010

We’ve known quite a few ski bums in our time around here. If you think about it, Dave McCoy himself would probably been called a ski bum, had the term or the lifestyle existed at the time. Maybe Dave was the original ski bum, for all we know.

Those were heady times for us back then, when the ski towns were being built and the ski bum subculture emerged. Look around town and they’re everywhere still, each finding just enough work to free them to lay down some serious skiing and snowboarding in the winter.

Winter music series begins with 'Soul Men' of a classical sort

September 24, 2010

Chances are, when one thinks of soul men, it’s a memory of that old song by Sam and Dave, “I’m a soul man.”

But that wouldn’t be the current usage. “Soul Men” is the name of the first program of Chamber Music Unbound’s winter music series.

Mammoth’s resident Felici Piano Trio will perform Bach, the grand master of the Baroque; the great Classical hero, Beethoven; Chopin, the Romantic piano virtuoso; and the eloquent musical narrator Robert Schumann.

Jack Laws, Sierra Field Guide author, artist at Booky Joint

September 24, 2010

It’ll be some kind of book signing Saturday afternoon, Sept. 25, at the Booky Joint, where John Muir “Jack” Laws not only will sign his swell new guidebook, but also will offer some artistic demonstrations.

Laws will sprinkle how-to demos in illustration, painting and sketching at the event, which starts at one o’clock and ends at 3.

Dave Leonard, owner of the bookstore, said Laws is a very entertaining guest, and for the Booky Joint to have him is a real treat.

He said refreshments will be served during the book signing, but the book is a refreshment in itself.

Local artsts' photos on canvas draw raves at Arts Fest

September 20, 2010

If people were to canvass the two artists at Bluebird Imaging, they’d discover that Kendra Knight and Aaron Horowitz are wild about canvas.

“The appeal to me would be that it looks more painterly,” said Knight, half of the husband-and-wife team. Together, they dazzled shoppers at last week’s Labor Day Festival of the Arts with photographs printed on canvas, then stretched on a 3-D display board.
