Gacho, Peter Hensley, Albright, Braun win in VCs

There were four races and four different winners on Tuesday, Aug. 13, at the Village Championships cross country mountain bike races at Shady Rest Park.

In the one-lap race, Seth Gacho narrowly beat Storm Patrie in 17:12, while Don Wilson finished third.

In the two-lap race, Peter Hensley (22:09) easily beat Cameron Small (23:30), with Gary Small finishing third.

In the three-lap race, Craig Albright finished first in 31:30, well ahead of Johnston Julao (33:58) with Rich Holcomb taking third.

Husky cheer team wins division title

Having been absent from competition for over a decade, the Mammoth High School Cheer Team came up big last month.

The nine-member team was directed by Cindie Wormhoudt and coached by Sarah Butner, along with assistant coach Danny Stanton.

Their victory came at Knott’s Berry Farm on Saturday, March 16, earning them some rest. It was their first competition since 2001.

“I’m extremely proud of these girls and of our coaches,” Wormhoudt said.

Chip White, Mammoth’s longtime contribution to the U.S. Ski Team coaching ranks, last week stepped to the top of the heap.

The United States Ski Association announced that the former Mammoth Mountain Ski Team coach and head coach of the women’s alpine speed team, has been selected by the U.S. Olympic Committee as finalist for National Coach of Year—the organization’s most prestigious coaching honor.

Ross wins at Squaw, Mancuso third

Mammoth Olympic ski racer Stacey Cook ran a great race last week at Squaw Valley, but came up short by the merest of margins.

Racing on Friday, March 22, Cook crossed the line just one one-hundreth of a second behind winner Laurenne Ross.

Perfect conditions for Sixth Annual race

While Eastern Sierra and California athletes filled the Mammoth Biathlon racing rosters, a pair of elite athletes from New Hampshire and Washington dominated the top tier of the competition last weekend.

Katrina Howe, a New England biathlete, and Casey Smith, from Winthrop, Wash., took the top elite spots on Sunday, March 24, at the sixth annual Mammoth Winter Biathlon.

Riffel, Montforte win in skicross

Mammoth athletes were just about everywhere this past week, from British Columbia to the Czech Republic, from Italy to Germany, from Sugar Bowl to right here at home.

Leading the charge were Madeline Riffel and Nicolo Montforte, who came away with NOR-AM Cup gold medals in skicross at Panorama, B.C., last weekend, March 16-17.

The reason might be critical to a race, such as the 2010 Olympic Men’s Downhill, in which a mere two seconds separated the gold medal winner and the 28th-place finisher.

Mammoth athletes bring home national titles

Mammoth athletes John Teller, Tyler Wallasch, Madeline Riffel, and Trevor Jacob brought home gold and silver hardware and three national titles after competing at the 2013 Sprint U.S. Grand Prix held March 1-2 at Canyons Resort, Utah.

Jacob took the top spot in the Snowboard Cross and the U.S. Championship title after beating out the competition on a tight course with wet, rutted snow for his first career win.

‘Dinosaurs’ topple the leaders in VCs

For the first time since the opening race of last year, Andie’s Flying Circus was defeated in the Village Championships.

Racing a dual giant slalom on Tuesday, Feb. 26, the Circus fell to members of the Miramar Dinosaurs, but there were a couple of key caveats involved.
