Tree thinning starts near town, includes Old Shady Rest Campground area

A mechanical thinning project will begin this week in the Old Shady Rest Campground and surrounding area, according to the Inyo National Forest. That means the sound of chainsaws and big equipment might be audible to users of the highly popular area behind Shady Rest, but the thinning project is considered to be a critical part of wildfire prevention work near Mammoth, forest authorities said. Routes into the areas being thinned will be closed to public access as a matter of public safety.

Hiker lifted out of backcountry after breaking leg near Matterhorn Peak

On Saturday, March 21, the Mineral County Sheriff’s Office, in Hawthorne, NV, received a 911 call regarding a hiker who had broken their leg in a fall near Matterhorn Peak, approximately 15 miles southwest of Bridgeport in the Sawtooth Mountain Range.

Missing hiker found

Missing Yosemite National Park hiker, Michael “Mic” Dahl, was found alive Monday morning, March 23 at approximately 11 a.m., in Yosemite National Park, according to Yosemite National Park authorities. Dahl was spotted by visitors on the Yosemite Valley Loop Trail. The visitors recognized him from the missing persons flyer.

Yosemite National Park Rangers and search volunteers continue to search for Michael “Mic” Dahl, a 20 year old male, from southern California. Dahl, has been missing since Saturday morning, March 21, 2015.

A student at University of California, Santa Barbara, Dahl arrived in Yosemite on the morning of Saturday, March 21, with three friends. He was discovered missing by his friends after a planned day hike.

Mammoth Wellness burglary suspect arrested

An 18-year-old Mammoth man, Justin Alan Platt, has been arrested as a suspect in the Mammoth Lakes Wellness marijuana dispensary burglary.

On Wednesday March 18, at about 9:45 p.m., Justin Alan Platt was brought to the Mammoth Lakes Police Department by his father, to turn himself in for the Burglary at Mammoth Lakes Wellness.

Round Fire’s only silver lining is…us

Five weeks after the Round Fire tore through the community of Swall Meadows and took out 35 homes as well as a home in Paradise, the victims have at least one bright spot in their lives—the rest of us.

According to Swall resident Lee Ann Wood, the chair of a newly established committee of locals that will manage a non-profit pass-through account set up through the Mammoth Lakes Chamber of Commerce Mammoth Community Foundation, in the past few weeks, about $150,000 in financial contributions for Round Fire relief efforts has come pouring in—and that is just the beginning of the story.

Foot chase, unrelated death of another individual give rise to sirens Monday afternoon

A Texas man who led police on a wild chase through Mammoth and reports of an unrelated death of another man, most likely due to natural causes, at about the same time yesterday sent sirens wailing and cops running on the afternoon of March 16 before the foot chases subject was finally caught.

The hullabaloo started on Monday at about 3:40 p.m., when Mammoth Lakes Police Officer Doug Hornbeck, while on routine patrol, stopped to contact a white male adult who was panhandling near the Laurel Mountain Boulevard entrance to the Gateway Mall.

Local climber Scott Sederstrom dies in Owens Gorge climbing accident

A Paradise Estates man, Scott Sederstrom, 44, was declared dead on March 14 after he fell while climbing in the Owens Gorge area near Bishop, according to the Mono County Sheriff's Department.

Eastside in the dark, but not for long

The Eastside lost power briefly Monday morning, affecting Mammoth, June Lake and Bridgeport, as well as Mammoth Mountain Ski Area.

According to the "Outage report" page at Southern California Edison, the lights went out at 10:34 a.m. All of Mammoth, June Lake and Bridgeport had power back on about a half hour later.

At the ski area, the power outage lasted longer, but was restored at 11:43 a.m. to Main Lodge.

More details on the power outage will appear in the Thursday, March 19 edition of the Mammoth Times.

Community members come out en masse over weekend to support residents who lost their homes

Round Fire benefit dinner held March 7 nets more than $50,000

More than 1,000 Eastern Sierra residents turned out this past weekend to support fundraising efforts for the victims of the Round Fire, raising more than $50,000 in the process.

The Eastern Sierra Tri-County Fairgrounds, Salvation Army and the Bishop Chamber of Commerce partnered with a group of volunteers to hold the Community Sale Saturday and Sunday while a second army of volunteers banned together to host a community dinner Saturday.

Fire season is here; unattended campfire burns one acre near Big Pine

A one-acre fire in Big Pine Tuesday night, March 3, was the result of an unattended campfire just west of School Street, across from Blake Street, according to CalFire, who took on management of the fire. The unattended campfire caused a one-acre blaze that CalFire, with the assistance of the Big Pine Fire Department, was able to contain at the one-acre size.

No suspects or witnesses were reported in the area and no injuries were reported.

Inyo Sheriff and California Highway Patrol assisted in the incident.

Brandon Castellanos, 23, dies March 1

Mammoth lost someone many of us will know from visits to the local Rite Aid and from Mammoth High School and the Mammoth schools, 23-year-old Brandon Castellanos. Brandon died on March 1 of a brain hemorrhage. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help support his family during this difficult time. Our hearts go out to Brandon's many friends and family members.

Off-Highway Vehicle grant application open house, TODAY, March 12

The public is invited to an informal open house to review Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) grant applications for the Inyo National Forest and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Bishop Field Office on March 12.

The agencies have submitted preliminary applications for grant funds from the California State Parks Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation (OHMVR) Division to enhance and manage motorized recreation. The agencies invite comments on the preliminary grant applications.
