Art meets conservation in the eastern Sierra

The Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep has the unique distinction of being the only endangered bighorn subspecies of three in the United States.

The population dropped to 100 individuals in the 1990s, but has since rebounded, and hit 500 individuals in 2012, spurring optimism for the continued growth and recovery of this rare and unique megafauna.

A late night production

January 18, 2013

His pseudonym is Late Night Billy, he works late at night and the beneficiaries of his labor are late-night music aficionados in Mammoth.

A promoter out of South Lake Tahoe, Billy brought Mickey Avalon to town in December, and “Late Night Productions” was in town again last weekend with “The Long Beach Invasion Tour.”

The headliner for the event was Sublime LBC, a cover band that included former bassist, Q-ball, of the original group.

Fido & Me - King Me!

January 18, 2013

“King me!” Fido yowled.

“What?”

“Go ahead and King me!”

“Fido, what in the world…?”

“OK, then let’s give the cat a ride around the house. He can just climb right up on my back if he wants to, and I’ll take him anywhere he wants to go. The sky’s the limit.”

“Fido, what’s going on?”

“It’s King Weekend, in case you forgot, and I’m all fired up and ready to go!”

Fido & Me Commander in Chief

January 11, 2013

“Hey hey hey hey!” Fido yelled over his shoulder. “I am really like-like-LIKING this guy!”

Fido got a big goofy grin on his face.

“We’ve been talking! He likes the same things I do!”

“Wow that’s good to hear, Big Boy. You never know how a cat is going to fit in.”

“He’ll be just GREAT!” Fido said. He nuzzled the cat and whispered something in the cat’s ear.

Selters to present dazzling multi-media show at Edison Theatre

January 4, 2013

Mountaineer is back from the Eastern Karakoram

Back from perhaps his most important expedition yet, Andy Selters has produced what’s likely to become his most memorable show.

With three Canadians and four Indian-Nepalese climbers, Selters ventured to a restricted and barely-explored area at the northern tip of India, the Eastern Karakoram.

Fido & Me: New Year

January 4, 2013

“Happy New Year, Fido!”

“What?”

“It’s a new beginning, Big Boy. Out with the old and in with the new!”

I reached into the closet for Fido’s New Year’s hat. It’s a silver, pointy, cardboard thing with an elastic chinstrap, and on the front it says “Happy New Year.” Actually, Fido’s goofy New Year’s cap looks just like mine.

“I don’t get it.”

Performing Arts in 2012 was diverse

December 30, 2012

In 2012, theater audiences were entertained by several diverse productions, from Sierra Classic Theatre’s emotionally complex “Proof” to Mammoth Lakes Repertory Theatre’s musical sensation “The Marvelous Wonderettes.”

The 2012 Festival Season was 'The Best'

December 30, 2012

Even before it started, town leaders pushed forward with a “Best Summer Ever” marketing campaign, with more hope than actual promise.

Fido & Me Breaking Trail

December 28, 2012

“I’m breaking trail!”

Fido was exuberant. Elated. Jubilant.

“Look at ME! I am almost beyond words!”

“That’ll be the day, Fido. There hasn’t been a moment when you were without words. Even in your sleep, you’re one big, red chatterbox.”

“Let’s go over here,” he said, plowing through the snow. “No, let’s go over here!”

Fido & Me A Christmas Mystery

December 21, 2012

“Reorge?!?” Fido called, obviously in a state of high consternation.

“Here I am!” I said, padding in from the hallway. “What the heck is going on?”

“There is something here that you should see, and I don’t think it is a good thing at all.”

I looked about, here and there, up and down, side to side.

“Fido, I don’t really see much out of the ordinary here, really.”

“Then what is that THING?” Fido wanted to know.
