Mammoth Lakes Summer of Stewardship: Panorama Dome Join MLTPA and Friends of the Inyo for the third event of the Mammoth Lakes Summer of Stewardship 2010! All volunteers are welcome but must wear close-toed shoes, long pants/sleeves, and sun protection. Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Panorama Dome trailhead on Lake Mary Road. Dog Adoption Day Eastern Sierra Dog Rescue is having its August adoption day in Mammoth from 12 - 2:30 p.m., at Mammoth Pet Shop. There will be lots of wonderful dogs looking for a special person to rescue them. For information, call (760) 935-4873.

These informal demonstrations will be done by Point Reyes staff. Devils Postpile rangers will be available on site to answer questions. Sierra Club Photography Outing John Wilson*, local teacher and professional photographer along with Bob Rice, technical expert and photographer, will teach participants about the camera, taking close-ups, water shots and a “grand landscape” in the Lakes Basin throughout the afternoon and sunset hours. All levels of photography skills and types of cameras welcome. In addition to regular hiking items, bring your camera, instruction manual, tripod if you have one, a well-charged battery, and rain gear. Bring something to eat, as we will have a chance for questions late in the day as we wait for sunset (7:15 p.m. and moonset 8:56 p.m.). Meet at 3 p.m.,Union Bank parking lot. 11th Annual Mammoth Lakes Foundation Golf Classic Join the Mammoth Lakes Foundation on the greens to support higher education and cultural enrichment in the Eastern Sierra. Sunday September 19 Sierra Club Hike: Tuolumne Cascades Lovely day trip along a fisherman’s trail with white heather and huckleberries along the route. There are also opportunities for swimming along the way. An easy hike 6 miles RT. Bring lunch, plenty of water, hat, sunscreen, hiking boots, etc. Meet at 8 a.m. at Union Bank parking lot or at 8:45 at Lee Vining Ranger Station on Hwy 120. Tuesday September 21 Sierra Club potluck Bring a dish for 8 to share and your own non-disposable place setting. Traveling the World Along the 38th Parallel, with David and Janet Carle, former Calif. State Park Rangers, who will present photos and stories gathered during their ongoing world travels in their quest of water-related environmental and cultural connections. They have crossed the Sierra by backpack from Mono Lake, driven the USA, Europe and Turkey, and in June 2010 visited the demilitarized zone in Korea. Potluck at 6:30, program at 7:30 p.m., Crowley Lake Community Center.
Wednesday September 22 Sierra Club Highway Cleanup Meet at the Crestview rest area north of Mammoth at 8 a.m. With 10 to 12 people, we normally finish at 10:30, and then enjoy some light refreshments (provided). If the rest stop is closed, meet at the parking area on north side of 395 at the end of Mammoth Scenic Loop. More information, call John (760) 932-1767.
Saturday September 25 – Sunday September 26 Sierra Club Hike Big Pine campout near Third Lake or day hike. This is a 12-mile hike with about 3,000 foot elevation gain in the first 5 miles. Or an 8-mile day hike to Third Lake and back. South of this lakes basin are the imposing Temple Craig and Mt. Sill and North Palisade, both 14,000 foot peaks. North Palisade Glacier south of Third Lake is nearly 2 miles in length and several hundred feet thick. Wilderness permit required for camping. Parking is limited at road’s end, 10 miles up canyon. Meet Saturday at 8 a.m. at Union Bank parking lot for the drive. Owens Valley hikers meet at Big Pine by 9 am at Hwy 395/Crocker Ave.(Glacier Lodge Road). Bring rain gear, hiking boots and warm clothes. Food, sunglasses, sunscreen and water purifiers (or plenty of water for day hikers). Sunday October 24 ESWC’s “wild spirits” celebration Eastern Sierra Wildlife Care’s Fifth Annual “Wild Spirits” fundraiser from 6-8 p.m. at Mountain Light Gallery, Main & Line, Bishop. This event will honor Karma, the Red-tailed Hawk, and features free food and drink, a silent auction (lots of great items), door prizes, Razzle the Raven, a new wildlife slide show, reptile display, and more.
