The former general manager of the Bridgeport Public Utilities District has been arrested on suspicion of embezzlement. According to the Mono County District Attorney’s office, in early April, the DA’s office was alerted to an allegation of misappropriation of funds from the Bridgeport PUD.
The office opened an investigation, which revealed that former general manager Cheryl Goode issued herself numerous unsubstantiated payments. An arrest warrant charging misappropriation of public funds was sought, and on May 17, Goode turned herself in at the Mono County Jail.
Goode posted the bail amount of $25,000. She is due to appear in the county superior court June 5 to face charges of misappropriation of public funds.
The president of the PUD, Jan Huggans, is also running for the District 4 county supervisor seat. She said the PUD board was under her direction when the District Attorney’s office began its investigation.
“I was appointed to the board (for my second term) Oct. 5, 2009, before the period of time Mrs. Goode is accused of wrongdoing and yes, I was president of the board of directors during the time for which Mrs. Goode is accused,” she said. “This specific conduct became known to the board in early April, at which time the Board of Directors of the District, by my order, immediately commenced its investigation, the results of which assisted the District Attorney in bringing the charges."
