DWP, Mammoth water district meet in Sacramento, no resolution yet
Does the City of Los Angeles’ Department of Water and Power own all the water rights on Mammoth Creek?
The city believes so, and it recently sued the Mammoth Community Water District, hoping a judge think so, too.
Both sides found themselves in Sacramento this Tuesday at a court-mandated “settlement hearing” hoping to find a solution that would suspend legal proceedings.
That didn’t exactly happen, said Mammoth’s water district manager, Greg Norby Thursday, but for the moment, the two sides are still willing to talk and try to figure out a solution short of going to court.
“We didn’t reach an agreement, but we are not done talking yet,” Norby said.
He said the legal challenges to the district’s rights to the creek were a surprise (there are two different challenges) given the district’s water rights were granted by the state over the past several decades. But DWP’s director of water operations, Martin Adams, said the district had plenty of warning.
“We have been voicing concerns about this during this time,” Adams said. “But an imminent legal deadline was triggered recently and we had to respond within that time limit.”
“‘Concerns’ are not the same as telling us our water rights should never have been granted,” Norby said. “We absolutely dispute that our water rights aren’t valid.”
Bishop man arrested for possession, sale of meth
A Bishop man was arrested in Chalfant last week on suspicion of having methamphetamine for sale and for being under the influence of meth, after local Mono County Narcotics Enforcement Team (MONET) members completed an investigation in the White Mountain Estates area near Chalfant.
On the night of Wednesday, Feb. 15, Mono County Sheriff’s Deputies and Bishop Police Department officers assisted in the conclusion of this investigation and arrested Dustin Anthony Smith for being under the influence of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance for sale.
Smith was transported and booked into the Mono County Jail in Bridgeport.
