A breakdown in communication with Town of Mammoth still problematic
Mono County and the Town of Mammoth Lakes have been dancing around each other over the issue of garbage for many years.
On Tuesday, the Mono County Board of Supervisors, for the first time, indicated it might be willing to “take out the trash” alone, if need be—even if it means raising parcel fee rates.
Property owners in the county currently pay for garbage disposal and rates have maintained the same since 1991.
The base rate for a residential customer is about $60 a year, according to county officials, with various formulas for apartment owners, commercial businesses, etc.
“We still don’t know what the town is going to do. Maybe it’s time,” said supervisor Larry Johnston.
Town of Mammoth residents provide much of the garbage tonnage that pays for the county’s solid waste fund.
If the town reroutes that garbage, as it is proposing to do to a new recycling facility, the money dries up, leaving the county in the lurch with several far-flung dumps to manage.
But the conversation between the town and county has been stalled for months, even years.
On Tuesday, the board appeared ready to consider facing the future without the town if need be, even as it urged solid waste manager Tony Dublino to continue working with town officials to get some answers.
Raising the parcel fee would require the consent of the voters.
