County might get involved in mediation regarding airport lawsuit

March 20, 2012

Mono County has been invited to join in a possible mediation process between the Town of Mammoth Lakes and Mammoth Lakes Land Acquisition, according to county staff.

The county’s sheriff department, the GIS department, and the animal control department got the invitation from the Town’s attorneys earlier this month because these departments are considered to be creditors of the Town (they provide services to the Town including dispatch services through the sheriff’s department), county counsel Marshall Rudolph said.

The county now has to decide if it wants to engage in the mediation, Rudolph said. The county board of supervisors meets Tuesday, March 20 and the issue will be up for discussion then.

The Town of Mammoth Lakes and MLLA are an impasse over a $42 million airport-related judgment won by MLLA against the Town and the Town could be facing bankruptcy. But a new state law that requires mediation when a municipality might face bankruptcy is now in place and the Town, at least, is hoping to avoid an out of court resolution with the mediation process.
