First Bluebird Day of the season on Monday, Ski Area opens Thursday

November 8, 2010

Skies were clear, the sun intense and behold – 2-4 inches of sparkling new snow in town and nearly 12 inches at the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area's Main Lodge. This is Mammoth Mountain from town, at 11 a.m.

Mammothites awoke to the familiar sound of snowplows, tires crunching on cinder-sprayed ice and, off the beaten path, clumps of new snow flumping to the ground from red firs, whitebark pines, Jeffrey pines and the occasional rooftop.

It was the first true bluebird day of the season, and it could not have been more lovely nor more appropriate.

Mammoth Mountain Ski Area opens for business on Thursday, and plans a big weekend of parties to go along with the skiing and riding.

The ski area announced on its website that Sunday's storm dumped more than a foot of fresh snow at Main Lodge. "As we get word from our crew on the mountain, it is looking closer to two feet of snow near the top."

Temperatures have dropped over the weekend allowing snowmaking to be in full blast, the ski area announced. "A combination of a fresh 14"-20" of snow and lower temps are making the perfect remedy for this Thursday's Opening Day!"
