BRIDGEPORT—More cold weather would help, not to mention snow.
But whatever happens in the next five weeks, Mono County Supervisor Tim Alpers said the June Mountain Ski Area will stay open through Easter Sunday, April 20.
“They’re going to make it work, whatever the circumstances are,” Alpers said from the dais at a meeting of the Mono County Board of Supervisors here on Tuesday, March 11.
Alpers, along with more than a dozen June Lakers, said he learned the news last week at a meeting of the June Lake Regional Planning Committee (RPAC), where June Mountain general manager Carl Williams delivered the news.
“Carl got a standing ovation from the folks who were there,” Alpers said, “and I must say that Mammoth Mountain Ski Area and June Mountain Ski Area have gone the last mile to keep it open.”
It has not been exactly a profitable enterprise, by any stretch of the imagination, Alpers said.
“There have been days in June Lake where one car shows up in the parking lot,” he said, “and there are some days when just five cars show up.”
He said Williams indicated it costs $3,500 a day just to open the facility, “there have been days that they’ve brought in less than $2,500.”
But, Alpers said, “they’re going the last mile to keep that ski area open, and I know the community really appreciates that.”
