The top halfpipe competitors in the U.S. and world may have been vying for spots on the U.S. Olympic Team in front on the Main Lodge deck, but over to the right, on the Andie's Double Gold race course, future Olympians were racing for their “gold” coming from Mimi’s Cookie Bar.
In the first 2014 Junior Village Championships race (sponsored by Giovanni’s), the U10-12-14s competed for both individual titles and the team award with Chaney Szeto (Designs Unlimited Daredevils) and Bjorn Karlen (Berger’s Buns) turning in the fastest times for the U10’s and Vivienne McGlashan (Jersey Mike’s) and Lance Davenport (Petra’s Pounders) capturing the top podium spots for the U12s.
When asked about the performance of the athletes, MMST U12 coach Lindsay Barksdale said,
“U10 Bjorn Karlen is making good changes and skiing fast. He won the U10 boys by over three seconds. U12 Lance Davenport is gearing up for a win in the next USSA race. He won the U12 boys by 2.5 seconds. The U12 girls are also coming on strong. They had four girls within 0.37.”
In the U14’s Sarah Ellis (GC Firewood Burners) reigned over all of the girls, while the honor of fastest U14 boy and fastest time of the day was shared by Luke Davenport (Beachmint Bombers) and Charlie Regelbrugge (Mammoth Outdoor Sports); each posted a time of 21.93.
Just .01 behind them was Sheldon French (John’s Pizza Works).
Regarding the close finish Barksdale added,
“The U14 boys are on fire! They had eight boys within one second. Their talent runs so deep this season. The U10s and U12s look ready for our home USSA GS race on Feb. 1 and 2. Come out and support us on ADG!”
