Man apparently attempts suicide Thursday at Mono Basin visitor center

January 31, 2013

The male victim of an apparent suicide attempt Thursday morning at the Mono Basin Visitor's Center has been flown to Reno for further treatment, according to the Mono County Sheriff's Department.

According to Jennifer Hansen, the public information officer for the sheriff's department, at about 8 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 31, the sheriff's department received a call regarding an unresponsive male in the parking lot of the Visitor's Center, which is located just north of Lee Vining, off of U.S. 395.

Mono County Sheriff’s Deputies, Lee Vining Fire Department, and the Mono County Paramedics responded to the Mono Basin Visitor’s Center, Hansen said in an email.

"They located the man in the parking lot with a single gunshot wound to his chest," she said. "The man was taken via ambulance to the medical clinic in Bridgeport and then transported via Careflight to Renown Medical Center in Reno for treatment.

"The circumstances of this incident are currently under investigation, but it appears this was a suicide attempt by a self-inflicted gunshot wound."

The identity of the man has not yet been released, but he "was not a local," Hansen said by phone Thursday afternoon.
