Reds Meadow plowing started Wednesday, May 1, and is still on track to be open by Memorial Day, weather permitting, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
“We are still on track to get the road open before Memorial Day but there are some substantial hazard trees that caused damage to roads due to the wind blowdown,” said Debra Schweizer, the Inyo National Forest’s public information officer. She said the heavy trucks used last year to log out the downed trees from the blowdown two years ago also caused some road damage. The campgrounds in the valley will probably not be open at that time, she said.
The road to the Schulman Grove in the Bristlecone Pine Forest is open, but the Visitor Center will not open until around Memorial Day. The road to the Patriarch Grove is not open due to snow.
The Lakes Basin campgrounds are still on schedule to be open by Memorial Day and possibly before, if conditions permit, Schweizer said.
