'Shop with a Cop' set for holidays

December 7, 2012

Annual event in Bishop on Dec. 15

The Mammoth Lakes Police Officers Association is coordinating a multi-jurisdictional, multi-county event that will benefit some well-deserving families for Christmas.

The event is called “Shop with a Cop,” and will involve the Mammoth Lakes Police Department, Bishop Police Department, Mono County Sheriff’s Department, Inyo County Sheriff’s Department, California Highway Patrol, and Inyo Probation Department.

The event is Saturday, Dec. 15, and “Shop with a Cop” will consist of officers and deputies picking children up at their homes and taking them to breakfast at Whiskey Creek Restaurant in Bishop at 9 a.m.

After breakfast, the deputies and officers will drive the children in marked patrol cars to Kmart, where law enforcement officers will guide them on a shopping experience.

The local law enforcement associations are providing the children with funds to purchase gifts for their family members.

After the shopping is complete, volunteers will help the children wrap their gifts and the law enforcement officers will take the children home to provide a Christmas for them and their families.

“The idea behind the program is to provide those families with a Christmas they would not otherwise be able to afford and to teach the children about the gift of giving,” said Officer Rick Moberly of the Mammoth Lakes Police Department.

“The program has been a very positive event for law enforcement and the officers get an incredible sense of satisfaction helping needy families in their communities.”
