Summer recreation programs to expand, offer more choices

March 26, 2011

Mammoth’s Recreation Department has embarked on an ambitious summer schedule.

At least six new camps were announced on the town website last week, including two mountain bike camps, two skate camps and a “Experience a Bit O’ Britain!” camp.

Um, er?

In the “Challenger British Sports Camps,” campers will learn from British coaches games like Tag Rugby, Cricket, Rounders, Kick Ball, British Bull Dogs and team relays and obstacle courses.

“Last year we did a lot surveys of kids and their parents, and that really shaped our summer program for this year,” said Stuart Brown, the town’s recreation director.

“We focused on being more customer-centric, and one of the main things was to have new programs.”
The programs also will feature local pro athletes in the skate and mountain bike camps, have partnered with local businesses for equipment and coaching.

In both skate camps, Wave Rave will provide the expertise. In the mountain bike camps, Footloose will get the nod in one while Mammoth Sporting Goods will get the other.

“We worked hard to get camps that were more indigenous to Mammoth than before,” Brown said.

The official announcement of the camp schedule is weeks away, but the full camps schedules are on the town’s website.
