Thanks for the Ski Day
The students and staff of Mammoth Elementary School would like our community to know about a wonderful event that was made available to us by the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area.
This past Monday and Wednesday, our 2nd-5th grade students were welcomed at the Mountain to enjoy a day of skiing or snowboarding, completely free of charge.
The Mountain and Disabled Sports of the Eastern Sierra generously provided instructors who took the students out for the day in skill-alike groups. What is most important to note is that, for some of our students, this was their very first time on skis or a snowboard, either due to parent trepidation and/or unfamiliarity with snow sports.
The events on Monday and Wednesday were executed with military precision. Not one detail was left to chance. Students who needed equipment were provided with free rental gear, which was waiting for us when we got to the Mountain, along with dozens of extras in different sizes, in case things didn’t fit.
Specialized equipment for our students with mobility challenges was provided by DSES. All the instructors’ energy and exuberance was positively contagious, and the little ones who looked absolutely terrified as they headed out onto the snow came back grinning from ear to ear.
The $5 lift tickets regularly (and generously) provided to students enrolled in Mammoth public schools make Mammoth Mountain accessible to all, and are something that we hope that more of our students take full advantage of in the future. As a result of students’ Free Ski Day experiences, we fully expect an increase in our Ski and Snowboard PE programs for 2013-14 …and who knows, perhaps a future Olympian had his or her first run on skis or a snowboard this week!
Harry Blackburn, Carl Underkoffler and Jr. Ski Team Staff; Craig Albright, Sandi Rowan and Ski and Snowboard School Staff; Billy Glenn and Rental Department Staff; Mary Walker and Corporate Administration Staff; and Kathy Copeland, Cara Leonard and DSES Staff, all worked in concert to make our first-ever Free Ski Day a smashing success!
Students, staff, and parents are still buzzing about it, and we are truly grateful for what was done for us. Thanks to each and every person who contributed to this spectacular, safe event for our students!
