County concern over drilling new wells |

The Mono County Board of Supervisors has been reluctant to adopt an ordinance that would try to prevent the construction of new water wells if the property in question is already in the jurisdiction of an established water district. The board has asked staff to go back to the respective RPAC (Regional Planning Advisory Committee) meetings to see whether or not there appears to be a need for such an ordinance.
A concern has been raised over the years both by Environmental Health and certain water-supplying entities in the county (e.g. the June Lake Public Utilities District) as to the wisdom of issuing permits for wells that will be constructed within the service area of an existing water supply system.
In that case, some feel it would make more sense, for environmental, public health, and financial reasons, to require the person wishing to install the well to hook up to the existing water system, if it is feasible to do so, rather than drilling a new well.
As soon as all comments on this issue have been gathered, County staff will get back to the Mono County Board of Supervisors for further direction. – SP
