Submitted photos Sean Somers describes the capabilities of the ARFF.
Thirteen members of Mammoth Lakes Community Emergency Response Team, (CERT) visited the airport on Saturday, Feb. 21 to cross train with airport first responders to insure timely and appropriate response to any airport emergency.
Firefighter Sean Somers trained on the Air Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) vehicle and demonstrated the operation of this special piece of emergency fire fighting equipment.
The ARFF is a state of the art vehicle capable of shooting water and foam up to 100 feet to extinguish fire. It also has a dry chemical fire retardant capability that is dispensed from a hose at the rear of the vehicle.
Officer David Scobie of the Mammoth Lakes Police Department (MLPD) briefed the group on the capabilities of the newly acquired Emergency Command Center trailer.
This trailer contains an operations center that will be deployed by MLPD and/or Mammoth Lakes CERT when needed to deal with local emergencies. The trailer has a tall light tower that can be raised to light up the command center area and there is a liquid propane fueled generator to provide power during deployments.
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Officer Jane Cox provided a demonstration of the equipment employed by TSA to protect airline passengers from those with harmful intentions.
TSA at the Mammoth Lakes airport has the same scanners, metal detectors, x-ray machines and other equipment that is employed at major airports.
Mammoth Lakes CERT is planning to conduct a training session beginning on Saturday, April 25, 2009. Anyone interested in joining the Mammoth Lakes CERT can contact Lt. Jim Short at (760) 914-0962 or via e-mail at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
