Town recruits internally
The Town has initiated an internal recruitment program in order to identify current employees who might be interested in taking on jobs where the Town is currently understaffed. This has identified a number of possibilities that could result in moving employees from lower priority tasks to higher priority tasks. Town Manager Rob Clark expects to come back to the Town Council at the time the budget is adopted and request a revenue neutral adjustment to the budget which improves efficiency and maximizes their ability to deliver the highest priority services.

Citizens Budget Committee meeting
The Committee was expected to have two meetings this week to focus on budget assumptions, fiscal stability policy decisions and program related policy decisions. Their goal is to develop recommendations for Council consideration prior to its June 17 meeting.

Propane tank coloration
Thom Heller, Division Chief/Fire Marshal, contacted the Community Development Department about a recent propane leak incident. On hot sunny days, tanks painted dark colors heat – resulting in an increase in pressure and leaks. In this particular incident, the tanks had warmed up just enough to allow for the liquid propane to expand to vapor, raise the pressure in the system and cause a leak. From a public safety standpoint, the Fire District has requested that Amerigas change from the dark green to a lighter green color. Community Development will implement this color change. Reds Meadow to open
The Reds Meadow Road, with access to the Devils Postpile National Monument, is expected to open to the public on Friday, June 5, 2009. The Forest Service and the Park Service are working with the Town of Mammoth Lakes, Mammoth Mountain Ski Area and Caltrans to get the road open and repairs made before opening to the public.
The first day of the mandatory shuttle service will be Saturday, June 13, and the shuttle will continue in operation through Wednesday, September 9, 2009.

Thefts from vehicles
Mammoth Lakes Police Department has been responding to a number of thefts from unlocked vehicles, and thefts from construction sites, in the last two weeks.  As MLPD has been taking these reports, they are hearing from other neighbors about thefts that have gone unreported. Missing items are satellite radio receivers, expensive sunglasses, cash, credit cards, sporting goods equipment, cameras and anything else that can be sold for quick cash. Unsecured tools, ladders, and saleable material like windows and doors are being taken from job sites.
If you see any suspicious activity in your neighborhood, call 911.

Raccoon troubles
Raccoons may be interesting critters in the local ecosystem, but they can become serious pests. Their bites or scratches are very dangerous to humans because of the threat of rabies and serious infection. They can also do a lot of property damage to wiring, insulation and wood if they get into your home.
Do not feed raccoons, or any of the local wildlife, and properly secure your trash. Wildlife should be respected and enjoyed from a distance.
If you are having a problem with raccoons on your property, call Mammoth Lakes Police Department at (760) 934-2011. They will enlist the help of Wildlife Management Specialist Steve Searles to assess the situation and propose solutions.

Mammoth to host state mountain bike racing
After a multi-year absence from competitive mountain biking events, mountain bike racing is returning to Mammoth Mountain this summer with the 2009 California Golden State Mountain Bike Championships taking place September 4-6, 2009. Taking place at and around Main Lodge, the event will feature all disciplines of mountain bike racing: Cross Country, Downhill, Super-D, Mountain Cross and Kamikaze. In addition to the racing set to take place, there will be a festival village and live music throughout the four-day event.
The last competitive mountain biking race held at Mammoth Mountain was the 2005 U.S. Mountain Bike National Championships.

Deena Kastor to headline in New York
Mammoth resident and Olympic medallist Deena Kastor will return to the hills of Central Park in search of a victory at the NYRR New York Mini 10K on Sunday, June 7, 2009. Kastor, 36, of Mammoth Lakes, has started 2009 with victories in the Bank of America Shamrock Shuffle in March and the BUPA Great Edinburgh Run in May. Kastor will be seeking her second NYRR New York Mini 10K title; she first won the race in 2004.

July 4th permits waived
The Town is waiving the permit fee for events conducted over the July 4th weekend. People wishing to hold an event must still obtain a permit even though the fee is waived. Also, if there are costs beyond the permit fee, those costs must still be paid by the sponsor. Please contact the Tourism and Recreation Department for more information at (760) 934-2712 or toll free at 888-GOMAMMOTH.
