The Public Arts Commission of Mammoth Lakes welcomed two new commissioners at its regular meeting on July 23: Bea Beyer and Nick Holst. “They will be excellent because of their professional and arts backgrounds,” noted Vice-Chair Noelle Deinken, who has served on the commission for three years. Holst said that Mammoth Lakes does a very good job of putting on programs and getting things done, mostly from volunteer work. “So I’m doing my part,” he said of why he applied for the commission. He moved here more than three years ago from Washington, D.C. Holst said that art should tell a story. “If art doesn’t tell a story – if you look at a photograph or a sculpture and it doesn’t speak to you – then it’s just decoration.” Specifically, he added that public art should tell the story of the town. “The best stories are, you know, about the people. So, it should be about the people.” Beyer said it was Deinken who inspired her to apply. “The reason I agreed is because I am very much in support of arts being accessible and available to the public as much as possible.”
“I’m very much in support of art being accessible and available to the public as much as possible,” Beyer said of her participation on the arts commission. Agenda items on Thursday included election of a new chair and vice-chair, project status updates, briefing on public arts fee and program, permanent placement of trout sculptures, and a workshop on commission rules of procedure, cultural arts plan and work priorities. “We are going to schedule a workshop in a month or so to discuss what our goals or aims are,” Deinken anticipated. “With nearly half our board replaced, we really need to sit down and go over everything that we haven’t discussed in the past – what our goals have been may change with some new people on board.” The other current commissioners are Michael Bornfeld and Kendra Knight. Former chair Paul Jurewitz did not reapply when his term expired. The new commissioners’ terms expire Aug. 4, 2012. |
