Altrusa International of the Eastern Sierra is excited to have Pat Crowther as the featured artist at its 2009 Art Show and Sale on October 3 and 4 at the Tri-County Fairgrounds, Floriculture Building. Crowther’s unique techniques and brilliant colors have made her one of the favorite artists for the last several annual Altrusa art shows. Her art is expressed in various media – watercolor, oil, pastels, pen and pencils – and is manifested in her subject matter which includes the Sierra, deserts and the Southwest, portraits, animals and botanical illustrations. Crowther’s formal education was at Harbor Community College and California State at Long Beach where she studied Art History and Studio Art. An interesting point with regards to her distinctive and colorful pastels is that she always starts with a red pastel pencil and continues wherever the subject matter takes her. Once she particularly wanted to use purple as a color, but the art subject would not allow it and simply took on a life of its own. She has lived in the Owens Valley for 43 years with the last 39 years in Bishop. She feels this area provides a view to paint whether she is hiking or driving and stopping along the road side. This is where most of her paintings find a beginning. In addition to this area, she and her husband have traveled to the Southwest, Monument Valley, North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park and many other locations. Even though she fell in love with red rock formations, the Owens Valley remains her favorite location. Her newest displays of art can be found at the kiosk in front of the White Mountain Forest Visitor Center in Bishop which comprises two panels, one being the ‘Owens Valley Formation’ and the second being the ‘Legend of the Owens Valley Paiute Indians’ and also at the kiosk near the first campground in Big Pine Canyon.
