This year’s MMSA 4th of July float claims that year-round flights are coming in 2010... and it was right. The destinations Portland, Seattle and Reno can be added next year, too.

Airport Commission Chair Pam Murphy revealed that Mammoth Mountain Ski Area has signed an agreement with Horizon Air to provide summer air service to Los Angeles in 2010. This compliments the current flight schedule for the 2009-2010 winter season that has grown from last season’s one flight a day into four flights a day – two from LAX, one from Portland, Ore., via San Jose and one from Seattle, Wash. via Reno, Nev.
Murphy clarified on follow-up that, though the contract has been signed, there will not be an official announcement until Horizon has the flight entered into their system, which should be in about two weeks.
Winter air service will begin on Dec. 17, 2009 and continue through April 11, 2010. Summer service will pick up immediately afterwards and continue through Sept. 30, 2010. For the time being, air service to Mammoth will temporarily cease for six weeks before resuming with winter service in the middle of November 2010.
According to Murphy, this six week hiatus is dependent on demand for continued air service in October.
“If it’s successful, [Horizon] has offered to fly those six weeks,” Murphy said. She noted that it was in the best interests of the community not to subsidize that time period as Mammoth has historically seen low visitation numbers in this off-season.
Mammoth Mountain continues to take responsibility for subsidizing the four winter flights, but the subsidy is being split with the Town for the single summer flight.
