A library for Kadzinuni E-mail

Students await the opening of Kadzinuni Library.
By Mary Canada

After four months in Kenya, I have  settled into life on the coast of Kenya, amid a cluster of small rural villages.  While Peace Corps volunteers are assigned a specific scope of work, we are  encouraged to have a secondary project. I was excited when the local District Chief asked if I would be interested in re-opening the Kadzinuni library.
I actually think I will be ‘opening’ the library, as it does not appear to have ever been organized or open on any kind of regular basis. The good news is that there is a library room, with a few odd books, a table and a few shelves, which is right next to my living quarters so it will be so easy for me to have the room open.
There is a primary school (also right next to my home – 80 to 100 children per classroom) and I am assured of having a long line at the door when I open the library in December.
Kadzinuni has a British benefactor who funded the construction of the library building, my home, and also the health dispensary that I work out of. This benefactor also supplied the books that are already available in the library.
I recently sweet-talked a local British man into donating 200 books and the great thing is that the books are right nearby in the Mombasa harbor.
The project is off to a great start, but I do need some help from my friends. While I am interested in book donations, my concern is the cost of getting the books to Kenya. Any information on ways to ship books at a greatly reduced rate, or free, will be appreciated.
As for book donations, I am especially interested in reading for young teens, but picture books and books to be read to small children would be great.
I am enjoying my life here in Kenya and look forward to opening the Kadzinuni Library!
