Unexploded device located
on Old Mammoth Road
On Sept.30, 2009 the police department was informed of a possible unexploded device just off the edge of the roadway on Old Mammoth Road above Red Fir Road. The device was located in a hole drilled into a rock/boulder with two wires protruding from it. The device was discovered by an employee of a tree cutting company contracted by the U.S. Forest Service to cut down and remove trees as part of a tree thinning project.
Mammoth Lakes Fire Department Personnel also responded to the scene and determined that the unexploded device may have been an overlooked charge from a road widening project that took place sometime during the early 1990s.
Officers secured the area with the assistance of the Mammoth Lakes Fire Department and U. S. Forest Service. Mammoth Lakes Police Department contacted the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department, Bomb Disposal Unit, which dispatched two deputies to the scene to detonate the device. The device was successfully detonated.
