At the October 15 meeting of the Mammoth Lakes Noon Rotary Club, Dee Di Giola spoke about her anti-bullying program, SMACK (Show More Acts of Caring and Kindness). Di Giola is a speech therapist at Mammoth Elementary School and a past victim of emotional bullying herself.
An act of bullying happens every seven minutes on a playground and one in every six adults reports being bullied, Di Giola said of a recent study.
The SMACK program has three primary goals: 1) cultivate a culture of caring and kindness in schools, 2) teach tolerance in school through literacy and education and 3) provide public information about bullying.
Most schools tend to be reactive to acts of bullying, but there are few programs designed to be proactive like SMACK is.
“We shouldn’t just punish someone who bullies,” Di Giola said. “These are teachable moments.”
