Save lives during Mammoth blood drive Mammoth Lakes residents have the opportunity to celebrate life by joining the Mammoth Lakes Rotary clubs in the community's annual blood drive, held this year in the Community Center on Pioneer Trail on Oct. 23-25.
Blood donated during the drive is used to meet the needs of patients in 25 hospitals through out northern Nevada and the Eastern Sierra. Each blood donation can help up to three patients needing transfusions. Every unit of donated blood is sent to the United Blood Services laboratory for testing and processing. Laboratory technicians separate the whole blood into components to meet patients’ specific needs. While individual components are transfused for specific medical needs, a patient with a serious injury may require several different components. This year, as in years past, the community drive is truly a community effort. The Pita Pit will serve yummy samples during the drive, and to give things a sweet finish, Ben and Jerry’s is once again sponsoring its “give a pint of blood, get a pint of ice cream” promotion. Due to the generous support of past drives, United Blood Services has added additional staff and an extra day to the drive. Community residents who wish to sign up for a donation can call Joanne at (760) 914-0470. Scheduled times for the drive are as follows: Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 23-24 from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Thursday, Oct. 25, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. -MT/UBS
