Laura Newland & Jill Wallentine Fiesta Dinner Co-Hosts June Lake Women’s Club Board Members
“Viva la fiesta,” was shouted by all at the second annual Sept. 15 Fiesta dinner at the June Lake Community Center. Sponsored by the June Lake Loop Women’s Club this community dinner served homemade beef and pork birria, beans and rice. For dessert there was homemade flan (or chocolate ice cream) and Mexican wedding cookies. Children delighted in cracking the 15 dozen confetti eggs over each other’s heads and all had a chance to take a swing at the candy-filled piñata.
The guests consisted of both locals and vacationers. It was especially great to see a very large contingency of Hispanic locals enjoy the evening. The bar proved again to be a favorite with margaritas and beer flowing. Raffle prizes from dinners at Roberto’s to a fresh floral bouquet from Cat’s Flower House, quart jars of Beverly Gilmore's homemade salsa, lift tickets to Mammoth Mountain/June Mountain, gift certificates to the Double Eagle Resort & Spa and several $50 cash prizes kept the raffle lively. Dinners were served by the Lee Vining fifth and sixth grade students. The tip jars went to the sixth grade annual Santa Cruz field trip. It was the first of many fund-raising events for the June excursion. As the evening progressed, the tip jars were brimming. This success came with the help of the many volunteers: sixth grade Lee Vining server: Juan Gomez and helping were fifth grade students: Eduardo Gomez, Victor Garnica, Damon Dondero, Melina Gonzales and fourth-generation June Lake resident Chase Willingham. Since this year's sixth grade is so small, they were also assisted by seventh grade students Carlie Willingham and Araceli Garcia, and eighth grade class member Casey Grabowski. On the bar: Jill and Dewayne, on tickets: Patti and Nancy. The official greeter to the masses was Richard, Rosie sold confetti eggs and Igor sold raffle tickets. The piñata crew (with the seemingly unbreakable piñata) were Bob and Andreas. The biggest job of the evening was our menu, planned, shopped for and prepared entirely on their own: Concha and Graciela. Other big donations came from Beverly Gilmore, whose homemade salsa was a smashing hit (Beverly purchased and prepared the salsa as a donation - YEAH!). Other donors were Model Dairy (eggs for the homemade flan), Marzano and Sons, June Lake Marina/Sierra Recreation, Double Eagle Resort & Spa, Lynda Biederman of June Lake Coldwell Banker, the June Lake Loop Women’s Club Thrift Store, Vons and Salsa’s Taqueria.
