AYSO: “Let the game be the teacher” E-mail

Special to the Mammoth Times

ImageThe AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization) soccer season is moving into its last two weekends of play. Players in all age divisions are truly enjoying the sense that each time they run onto the field to play the game they have another opportunity to demonstrate their improved skills. The coaches have emphasized to the players throughout the season that while the objective of any game may be to win, “the overall goal is to enjoy the game and strive to do their best.”
As the season progresses, the parents, fans and coaches notice the improvement in their players’ skills as they strive to do their best. Often the skill improvement is the result of drills and techniques worked on during the weekday practices, but there is an undeniable truth in the soccer world—that playing the game is the best teaching and coaching “technique” of all. “Let the game be the teacher” could be every coach's mantra.
The game is the teacher with the coach’s guidance, but the players work on their sportsmanship skills at the same time by remembering and embracing their own AYSO Players Pledge:

AYSO Player Pledge:
“In my words and actions, I pledge to:
1. Play for the sake of playing a game, not just to please a parent or coach.
2. Always give my best effort and work as hard for my teammates as I do for myself.
3. Treat all players as I would like to be treated.
4. Be a team player and not show off or hog the ball.
5. Be a good sport and acknowledge good plays whether they are made by my team or my opponents.
6. Abide by the Laws of the Game.
7. Cooperate with my coaches, teammates, opponents and the referee.
8. Never argue with or complain about referee calls or decisions.
9. Control my temper when I feel I have been wronged.
10. Remember that the object of the game is to win, but the goal is to enjoy myself.”

In the spirit of sportsmanship, congratulations to the following “Players of the Week” for Oct. 13-14. For updated information, photos and schedules, visit the AYSO Web site mammothayso.com.
