MEASURE “S” PASSES E-mail
Wednesday, 07 November 2007

For months, the passion regarding the Nov. 6, 2007 special election has been slowly bubbling to the surface. Ever since Measure “S” was defeated last June the anticipated re-election process and subsequent heated debates have been heard on the radio, read in the papers and discussed across dinner tables and breakfast nooks.
Jack Winkler, Ray Doblick and John Rogitz wrote letters (MT November 1-7, 2007 and Sept. 20-26,2007)) coming out against the passage of Measure “S” arguing that it is “taxation without representation” while local residents like Greg Newbry, Kirk  Stapp and Tom Cage presented the positive aspects of Measure “S” should the parcel tax continue for another four years.
And now the waiting is over. It was a long day for the people working in the Clerk-Recorder’s office in Bridgeport  By 9:15 p.m., the game was “Hurry up and wait.”  At 9:40 p.m. the sheriff’s department came in with the ballots and the personnel at the Clerk-Recorder’s office set to work.
Bustling about, fielding impatient phone calls and tallying the ballots, the end result was that Measure “S” passed by a very narrow margin.  It needed to pass by 67 percent and passed by 68.42 percent.  Total YES votes were 1027 and total NO votes were 474 (31.58 percent). A total of 1,501 registered voters turned out at the polls.
Clerk-Recorder Christy Robles said it was probably so close because a lot of second homeowners appeared to have registered to vote in this election. “I went through my first batch of absentee ballots and had to order a second set,” said Robles, who was all too happy to be done with the day.
