Deena Kastor, shown here in a still from the movie, was one of five people who were used on camera in what Dunham calls “the definitive documentary on marathon running.” Mammoth Lakes puts in some cameos as well. Check it out!
The first annual Mammoth Film Festival kicks off  Nov. 15, with a lineup of 10 films, including Spirit of the Marathon, starring Mammoth's own marathon champion Deena Kastor.
Spirit of the Marathon filmmaker Jon Dunham, a runner himself, decided to put together the definitive documentary on marathon running. Dunham was put in touch with Kastor when he began making the film more than five years ago. It was before Kastor had won a marathon and before she had won the bronze medal in the 2004 Olympics.
“I had planned to just use her as a voice in the film,” Dunham remembers, “but she had a really nice presence and ended up going from a voice to one of the five people I focused on in the film.”

When Spirit of the Marathon screens on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 11 a.m., it will be the first time Kastor has seen the film, even though it has already been to the Chicago International Film Festival and won the Audience Choice award.
The project was filmed in North America, Asia, Africa and Europe, but a large chunk of the filming took place in Mammoth Lakes, according to Dunham. It's a great opportunity for locals to check out their town on the big screen.
The film festival itself, which seemed a bit rocky over the last month, has really pulled things together quickly, with an interesting schedule of film screenings, fireside chats and live music. The best part about this year's festival is that it's free! You do still need to register, however, and registration begins today (Nov. 15) from 3-6 p.m. at the Whitney Board Room in the Grand Sierra Lodge in the Village. Registration is also available on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at the same location.
Make sure to note that by registering for this year's festival you are automatically entered into Mammoth Film Festival's database as a Charter Member, which means when MFF implements registration fees at next year's event and all future events, you will be exempt.
The schedule for this weekend's festival is now posted on the Web site www.mammothfilmfestival.com, so check it out, and make sure to watch one or all of the films being presented!
