Library sets an opening date Mark your calendars, Planning Commissioner Jo Bacon announced last week that the Opening Day for the new library in Mammoth Lakes has been set for Dec. 17. Watch for more detailed information soon in the Mammoth Times. -MT
CHP serves up maximum enforcement during Thanksgiving Motorists heading out on the highways this holiday weekend should drive by the rules and exercise both care and good judgment, as the California Highway Patrol will be out in force during its “Maximum Enforcement Period.” The MEP is part of the CHP's joint effort with other state patrols, Operation CARE (Combined Accident Reduction Effort), which seeks to reduce the number of collisions that lead to injuries and fatalities. Every available officer will be on patrol checking for everything from seat belt and speed limit compliance to DUI violations. CHP wants to join as many motorists as possible in giving thanks for safe roads and travel during the holidays. -MT
Tourism and Recreation unveils new Web site The Mammoth Lakes Tourism and Recreation's Web site, www.visitmammoth.com, launched on Nov. 15. The new site is designed to allow visitors to more easily and expeditiously find places to stay and things to do in Mammoth, including the opportunity to live like a local through a new section called “Mammoth Life.” The new site has been under development for the past six months and comes with a price tag of $25,000. According to some early evaluations, however, the site is having some issues with Firefox and Internet Explorer on Mac platforms. Users should be patient when navigating with this software until all the bugs are worked out. -MT/TOML
Area Salvation Army seeks volunteers The Salvation Army serving Inyo and Mono counties issued a call last week, saying the charitable organization is in need of volunteers to staff their Red Kettle program sites at various businesses throughout Bishop, Mammoth Lakes and Lone Pine. Shifts are available in easy to manage two or three hour increments, or all say, for those with more time permitting. Officials with the organization stressed that all donations raised go toward local aid via the Salvation Army run programs that assist those in need in our various nearby communities. Energy efficient lighting upgrades available The High Sierra Energy Foundation, in partnership with Southern California Edison and the Town of Mammoth Lakes, is sponsoring a program that offers free energy efficiency lighting upgrades to multi-family residential units in Mammoth Lakes. Any multi-family project in Mammoth can qualify for the program, and the upgrades can save up to 25 percent of a complexes lighting costs each month. Public Arts Commission vacancy Anita Hatter, Clerk of the Town of Mammoth Lakes, announced late last week that a vacancy in an unexpired term currently exists on the Public Arts Commission because of a resignation. The term expires on August 1, 2010. The normal term of appointment is three years. The PAC meets on the second Thursday of each month at 2 p.m. Interested parties should file an application with the Town Clerk's office on or before Wednesday, Dec. 12, at 5 p.m. Application forms may be obtained from the Town Offices in the Minaret Village Shopping Center, by writing to P.O. Council meeting canceled The next regular meeting will be on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m. -TOML
Street parking regulations Effective Nov. 1, residents and visitors cannot park on Town roads, except in designated areas during daylight hours. The regulations last through April 30. Violations are punishable by a fine of $47. -MLPD
Turkey busts out of local oven MLPD officers, in association with Mono County Sheriff's Search and Rescue and several local chefs, initiated a massive search for a Thanksgiving turkey that engineered a clever escape from a local oven prior to dinner. A trail of stuffing was found at the scene, prompting the use of search dogs, including Mammoth Times columnist Sundance. Officials said the bird was armed with only a baster and should be considered extremely delicious. -MT
Pumpkin dessert contradicts math formula A local Mammoth scientist, who asked that his identity be withheld for security reasons, said in an exclusive interview with the Mammoth Times he recently had a revelation this holiday season that he believes contradicts the commonly held mathematical formula πr2. Upon cutting into a pumpkin pie, the scientist said, it suddenly occurred to him that “pie are not squared, but are in fact...round.” He did, however, say that further study was needed, and returned to the pie...and a college football game. -MT
Who’s in Town? Occupancy was up again going into the Thanksgiving holiday period, with figures for the Nov. 16-17 weekend at approximately 23 percent, up three percent from the previous week. Midweek bookings took an even bigger jump up, with numbers for the Nov. 18-21 block of days at 22 percent, a climb of nine percent from the week before. Early projections for the Thanksgiving weekend, Nov. 22-24, were up as well, estimated at 38 percent at press time, a gain of four percent from last week's estimate. –MT/T&R
