June Mountain opening update According to an e-mail from June Mountain Ski Area General Manager Carl Williams, plans are still in place to open for the season on the original scheduled date of Saturday, Dec. 15. JMSA had scheduled to commence snowmaking operations on Nov. 3, but was delayed until Nov. 19, the first date temperatures were cold enough to allow efficient operation from the Chalet to the top of Chair 2. Williams added that, as of press time, there is little possibility of enough natural snowfall to open the entire mountain, and until more snow arrives they will start with limited terrain, If unable to open on Dec. 15, JMSA will reschedule for the earliest possible date. At this point opening day features will include: Lifts: Chairs 1 & 2 Skiing/Riding: Chair 2, Mambo Trail only Ski School: Full operation (primarily beginners) Food & Beverage: Chalet Cafeteria and Bar—full operation Rentals: Full operation Sports Shop: Full operation Terrain Park: Limited terrain features Williams did, however, say that with current temperatures and long range forecasts, JMSA is optimistic they can hit the target date. -MT/JMSA
Mammoth open top to bottom Mammoth Mountain Ski Area went top to bottom last weekend with the opening of Stump Alley Express on Dec. 1-2. That move gives MMSA the most open lifts and the runs in California. The Mountain said it also planned to open Cornice Bowl, with service from Panorama Gondola, giving skiers access to more than 2,220 vertical feet of skiable terrain serviced by seven lifts, with a mix of packed-powder and machine groomed snow conditions. Colder temperatures have allowed the Mountain to ramp up snowmaking, clearing the way for a full session of Winter Orientation, which runs through Dec. 21 and includes advanced ski and snowboard camps, equipment clinics, in-store rep nights, the ULLR Festival in the Village at Mammoth, movie premieres, concerts, Unbound contests and more. According to MMSA, the Unbound Main Park is in “excellent condition,” with eight jibs, two tabletop jumps and one hip jump. Snowmakers have taken advantage of low temperatures day and night to perfect Unbound features, and construction of the Super Pipe is said to be already underway. Local forecasts call for continued cold temperatures, conducive to snowmaking, and potential snow showers are on the horizon next week. Meanwhile, snowmaking crews will continue to crank out fresh snow and open even more terrain as conditions permit. For information on Mammoth’s latest conditions, visit www.MammothMountain.com. -MT/MMSA MLFD to hold public hearing The Mammoth Lakes Fire Department will hold a public hearing on Dec. 11 at 2 p.m. at Fire Station 1 on Main Street, concerning the new California, International, and MLFD fire and building codes. A special focus will be on the construction type and materials allowed in critical wildland fire areas. The public is encouraged to attend to learn both about the code and to comment on the Fire Hazard Severity Map for our area. -MT Assault defendants arraigned, trail date set Defendants Kevin Malburg and Anthony Saucedo were both arraigned at the Bridgeport Courthouse on Tuesday, Nov. 27, on information previously acquired during the Nov. 20 hearing. Trial confirmation, motions and a pre-hearing conference has been sent for Jan. 8, 2008 and trial has been set for Jan. 28, 2008. The defendants are on trial as a result of an assault on KMMT radio personality Darrell Johnson during the early morning hours of Nov. 4, as Johnson was leaving the Village at Mammoth following a birthday celebration. -MT ESTA to increase fares The Board of Directors of the Eastern Sierra Transit Authority (ESTA) has scheduled a public hearing to receive comments on proposed adjustments to the fares charged the users of ESTA public bus routes and services.
