Mammoth Lakes Women's Club inspires hermits to get out and meet other like humans
By Stacey Powells Mammoth Times Staff Writer
The second Speed Dating event to hit the Town of Mammoth Lakes took place at Lakanuki on Wednesday, Dec. 5. Debby Christiana, one of the original organizers of the event along with Lynne Blanche was not only a worker-bee this time around, but a participant as well. “Some of us have lived here for more than 20 years, and think we know everyone in town, but putting together and now participating in the speed dating event, I found that there are many people I don't know here in the Eastern Sierra,” Christiana said. “I had an excellent time and would definitely do this again.”
Lisa Nelson was in attendance and said, “It was great.” She had never done anything like that before and had only seen Speed Dating on television. “I thought each of the gentlemen were very different and we were able to communicate a lot in the short amount of time we had. They were all very friendly and open and extremely nice and I would be open to getting to know some of them better over dinner sometime,” Nelson said. “It was a lot like computer dating but it's always better meet someone in person. There was just the perfect amount of guys there and the perfect time to get to know them a little bit.” Victor Gutierrez said his experience was spectacular. “I had a great time. It was fun and I would do it again if I'm not dating someone on a regular basis. From my point of view, I think a lot of people know of me, but not about me, and it was a great opportunity for people to get to know me. It was also really cool to be able to pick someone's brain for five minutes because that's plenty of time to figure out if you want to date that person outside of the speed dating arena.” Gutierrez also said the ladies running the speed dating event—Lynne and Debby—made it very comfortable to participate. Robert Atlee said it was scary at first, but ended up being a fun experience for him. “Everyone was very nice and friendly. I liked it and would do it again,” Atlee said. “I feel like I made some new friends. I don't know if a date will come of this but I know more people than I did before. They shouldn't call it Speed Dating, because it was about meeting new people and maybe doing something later on. It was really worthwhile...especially if you are feeling like a hermit sometimes, and it's a great fund-raiser for the Women's Club.” “Speed Dating is only going to be as successful as the participants. People who want to do it and have enthusiasm for doing it are going to have a fun time,” Christiana declared. |
