Holiday fund raising
At least three fund-raisers were held in Mammoth the weekend of Dec. 7-9—Mammoth Hospital's Festival of Trees, the Eastern Sierra Avalanche Center’s Season Kickoff Event and the 2007 Island Extravaganza put on by Disabled Sports Eastern Sierra. In this “do it all” community, local residents organized the events, collected prizes, made gingerbread houses, donated items, decorated Christmas trees and wreaths, and sold raffle tickets. These same people then turned around and purchased event tickets, bid on auction items, bought raffle tickets and signed their names to silent auction sheets. Locals did whatever they could to help each organization, whether it was purchasing a single raffle ticket or bidding on a week’s stay in Hawaii. When all was said and done these three events had collected nearly $100,000—and this is during a time when the economy is slow and the community was still waiting for snow. The three fund-raisers will benefit organizations that definitely help the local residents, but they are also there to help our visitors. The hospital is always ready to treat a sick or injured visitor. ESAC helps advise and educate those visiting the Eastern Sierra about the backcountry and DSES is dedicated to changing the lives of any child or adult with a disability and their families by offering year-round outdoor sports and activities. We salute all the donors and volunteers who made these events better than ever and to this absolutely amazing community of 7,500 residents that has been so incredibly generous.
