_Bonnie Zwart (1957) and Kay Warta (1949) enjoyed a visit a the Mammoth Locals' ReunionMAMMOTH TIMES PHOTOS/SUSAN MORNING Perhaps the most remarkable social event of last year had to be the one that happened in Shady Rest Park, the place where the locals could be found on Sept. 1, for the Mammoth Locals’ Reunion, put on by Marianne O'Connor. The term “local” is always up for debate in a small town like Mammoth, but when O'Connor reasoned it was time to have a celebration to see old friends, make new friends, relax and enjoy the outdoors, hear great music, eat great food, enjoy good wine and local beer, watch children play, dance into the night, and feel the community spirit that exists in a small town, she also reasoned that all who come together for a gathering like this should be considered “locals.” Residents and homeowners of Mammoth and surrounding communities from the past and present turned out for the Reunion. Previous “Mammothites” came from all over the country: Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Wisconsin, Florida, Texas, Nevada, Hawaii and, of course, Southern California. One ticket buyer wrote, “I lived in Mammoth in the 70s and skied and worked just like everyone else I knew and it was the best time of my life! Can’t wait to come back and see my old friends!” Another wrote, “I just want to be there. Experiencing another fine Mammoth moment in time.”
Festivities included seven bands, volleyball, horseshoes, basketball, Frisbee, skate park, kids' playground, face painting and bungy trampoline. Food, special treats and drinks were on the menu all day. Dave and Roma McCoy, the developers of Mammoth Mountain and the couple who provided the opportunity for the “locals” to call this beautiful gem “home,” were the guests of honor, along with many residents who have lived in Mammoth 40 years or more. A continuous slide show displayed images of Mammoth people, places and events of the past, and all the “locals” in attendance had fun catching up with past friends and making new ones. |
