Local merchants reflect on the past holiday season |

This past holiday season was an odd one to be sure. With the lackluster numbers of Holiday season 2006 still in the back of everyone's mind, the question many locals pondered: “What was it going to be like for business owners for the 2007 holidays?” Would there be enough snow to bring in the hordes? If there was snow, was it going to be too much so the hordes went back down to sea level? If they didn't go back to sea level, would they splurge and shop, or stay and ski? The Mammoth Times took a casual survey of a sampling of business owners and this is what they had to say:
“We did great this past holiday season,” said Joe Contaldi, owner of Performance Athletics (Winter)/Performance Anglers (Summer). “Up to the beginning of the holiday we were very slow but as soon as people came to town we were slammed. We were up 40–60 percent from last year and I'm glad we got all that snow because in the long run it will help us all out.” When Contaldi and family first moved up here two years ago it was in the middle of the big storm that hit our area during the holiday season and all the chaos that ensued. “There was no help. The roads were a mess and we were stuck. This year was great the way they handled everything and we are very appreciative that MMSA started making the snow when they did.” Red Lily owner Patricia Vanders said they were steady up until Christmas, but have slowed down a bit. “This is my first winter and I did what I expected to do,” Vanders said. “I sold mostly all my Christmas trees with the exception of one that got stolen, but I was going to throw it out anyway.” Vanders is getting ready for the Valentine's Day rush which will be here before we know it. “The season started out slow but once it picked up it was incredible,” said Emily Falkingham, manager of Van Heusen's. “When it's snowing outside, the shop is busy. When it's sunny, we are slow. It took a long time for the holiday shoppers to get here and it will be interesting to see what this winter brings, since gas prices aren't an issue anymore. The outlet stores are a great asset for this town and Van Heusen is up compared to the same week last year.” Victor Hernandez, a cashier from local bakery Schats said they had a very good turnout for the holidays. “We are up almost 90 percent from last year,” Hernandez said. “It was steady and we sold out of bread twice just before the storm hit. Everybody was stocking up just in case.” Dawn Vereuck, owner of Elegant Bath and Kitchen, said in general her business was up 11 percent from the 2006 holiday season. “It's partly because my business doesn't solely rely on the snowfall,” Vereuck said. “A lot of second homeowners and locals come into the store and because its a good location; my numbers are always pretty good.” During the first week in January, however, her sales were down 65 percent from the year before. “On Friday, Jan. 4, I had people purchase a few candles, but for the rest of the weekend it was hardly worth staying open. I was disappointed. We live in snow country and the possibility of a lot of snow is what happens in this town, so to tell people to leave if they have a medical condition was a bit over the top.” The Town is gathering the hard numbers for the holiday season and we hope to have those for readers before the end of the month. Nearly everyone was delighted with the heavy snowfall the first week in January. The Night of Lights up at Canyon Lodge on Jan. 12 was a success with wall-to-wall locals and visitors “oohing and aahing” at the dramatic display. “I thought it was a spectacular event for a spectacular community. Some great things have happened here recently and instead of arguing about local politics for a night everyone came together to celebrate Mammoth..locals and guests alike. It was an evening to remember, “ said Mammoth Mountain Ski Area CEO Rusty Gregory. With two weeks still to go, January 2008 is looking to be a smash because as one business owner put it, “We are packed and jammin' this weekend!”
