The recent January storms not only caused the usual havoc, but they also gave Mammoth Lakes Hospital a few additional headaches to deal with as well.
Whether due to warranty issues or ongoing construction, three water leaks found their way into one of the new operating rooms. According to the facility's spokesperson, however, the problem was short-lived and dealt with quickly. “The suite was immediately closed and it has since been repaired and is now functioning and in use,” said Lori Ciccarelli, Director of Public Relations for Mammoth Hospital.
“When we had that large snow we had some contractors working on some construction on the building,” stated Joe Bottom, Mammoth Hospital Chief Operating Officer. “We're not sure what happened or when the damage was done, but it looked like some things were dropped on the metal roof and looked like one of the seems had pulled apart, which would be a warranty issue.” The O.R. was shut down while the issue was investigated.  It took almost a day and a half to get all the snow off of the roof and locate the leak.
“Once we located the leak we covered it up and got the roofing company over to investigate. All the leaks are patched and we are back in service,” Bottom said.
The leaky O.R. was out of service for about three days, but fortunately they didn't need to use it during that time.
“It was a nuisance, but we were able to deal with it fairly fast,” Bottom said. “Certainly when water comes into an O.R. it has to be taken care of quickly.   Unfortunately we had about six feet of snow on the roof at the time, but it's all been handled.”
