Measure “R” argument At the Mammoth Lakes Town Council's last regular meeting, Feb. 20, Council added a one-half transactions and use (sales) tax measure to the June 3 ballot. The special tax, designated for use for funding recreation, trails and parks, will require a two-thirds “yes” vote for passage. One argument in favor of the measure was filed with the Town Clerk prior to the deadline of 5 p.m. on March 3; the argument was signed by Mayor Skip Harvey, Rusty Gregory, MMSA CEO, Bill Sauser, Tourism and Recreation Commission Chair, Eric Wasserman, Mammoth Lakes Chamber of Commerce, and John Wentworth, MLTPA. No argument in opposition was filed. -TOML
Air service preparation Town of Mammoth Lakes Community Relations Manager Stuart Brown reported last week the Town is actively involved in numerous activities at the airport, many of which are related to reestablishment of regional commercial air service. The environmental reviews related to commercial air service under NEPA and CEQA are continuing and are expected to be complete in May. An environmental review of the runway resurfacing, which is an unrelated project is also proceeding. Bids for updating the automated weather system and replacement beacons will be awarded soon, and bids to create a passenger terminal out of an existing maintenance building and to resurface the runway have been advertised. Discussion with Horizon Airlines about ground services are also said to be continuing. A TSA representative was scheduled to visit the airport this week to work out arrangements for passenger screening. In addition, a loan agreement with MMSA is being finalized to cover start up costs, and the Airport Commission has begun ground transportation discussions. -TOML

Mono County receives federal emergency grant Mono County's branch of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced last week that the National Emergency Food and Shelter program, under the auspices of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act, has awarded the area's FEMA board a grant worth $8,706 for the 2008 calendar year. The funding is not intended for disaster emergencies, but rather to provide emergency food and/or shelter services for homeless and low-income families. FEMA officials say the funding helps stock, maintain and dispense food staples, including infant formula and diapers, as well as assist with rent/mortgage problems and paying for utilities. A nonprofit organization staffed by volunteers, the board meets quarterly to review expenditures, take inventory of food pantries in Mammoth, Bridgeport and the Walker/Coleville area, and conduct other pertinent business. Mono County Department of Social Services is the actual recipient of the funding and disperses amounts as directed by the local board. Contact Suzanne West at (760) 924-1776 for more information. -MT

Midweek figures were also off, but not by much, at 39 percent for the March 9-13 period, down three percent from the week before. -MT
