Coucil for the Arts' Mueller hopes project will land big fish: Arts Commission sponsorship

Trail of the Trout is swimming "full stream ahead" for summer 2008, said Gaye Mueller of the Mono Council for the Arts.
Mueller brought three of the already painted small trout statues with her to last week's Public Arts Commission. She is hoping that the Commission will sponsor several of the large trout statues and showed Commissioners the samples of what the works will look like.
The Trail of the Trout project will place the statues up and down the Eastern Sierra corridor from Lone Pine to Topaz in what's described as a "scenic path." The project, which has been in the works for several years, was first expected to get off the ground last summer. Proceeds from Trail of the Trout will go to help fund arts and science programs at local schools.
Participants will have the opportunity to either sponsor or purchase a two-foot trout, such as the ones Mueller showed the Commission, or an eight-foot trout.

Those sponsoring a fish will pay either $500 or $2,000, depending on the size, and in the fall when the Arts Council holds the Trail of the Trout auction, the fish is auctioned off to the highest bidder.
Sponsors choosing to purchase a trout for $1,500 or $3,500, respectively, will own the sculpture outright, and can either keep or donate it to the auction.
Mueller hopes the Commission, if nothing else, purchases an eight-foot sculpture to be placed on permanent display at the Welcome Center plaza.
The Commission, while enthusiastic about the project, asked Mueller to come back to its next meeting with more information regarding how exactly the money will be used. It also asked that she bring back a list of her sponsors so far so that commissioners can see where other sponsors in Mammoth plan to place their sculptures, and then fill in the gaps around the spots.
Trail of the Trout will be a one time only public arts exhibition.

Gateway Monument
The Commission also reviewed progress on the Gateway Monument process. March 30 is the deadline for the public to present any ideas or concepts they have for the design of the monument, which will be located on Hwy 203, shortly after exiting U.S. 395.
Commissioners also received an update on the Welcome Center plaza's directional signage to which commissioners committed $12,000 last summer. The signage is still moving forward and plans call for it to be installed this summer.
Lastly, the Commission was told that the consultants working with Mammoth Lakes Trails and Public Access on the Trails Master Plan will be addressing commissioners at an upcoming meeting, yet to be determined. At the meeting, consultants said they plan to suggest locations along public trails they think will serve best as spots for public art.
