Two weeks and counting until the first annual Mammoth Winter Biathlon takes place on Saturday, March 29, at the Obsidian Dome trail head. Organizers have touted it as “one to remember” and recently released the event schedule: Friday, March 28, 6-8 p.m. Mandatory safety and biathlon clinic by Race Director Mike Karch in the Mammoth Hospital S.P.O.R.T. Center. Pizza will be available. Those wishing to race and shoot Saturday must attend the clinic. Saturday, March 29, 8 a.m. Obsidian Dome trail head. Zero rifles, warm up and rifle practice. No prior rifle or biathlon experience is required. Everything competitors need to know will be explained at the clinic and the Saturday morning practice. 9-11 a.m. 3k race for ages eight to 12, prone shooting only. 10k sprint race for ages 13 to 100, prone and standing shooting. Races are freestyle so you can diagonal stride or skate. Racers will start at 30-second intervals. Course terrain will be moderate and groomed for both classic and skating. Noon-2 p.m. Awards ceremony and lunch at Crowley Lake Community Center. Gourmet lunch provided by Jo Vroman Mammoth Hospital, ESNSA member. Medallion awards given for first through third age-group winners. Grooming at Obsidian Dome provided by Brian Knox and Mammoth Nordic.
Rifles and ammunition will be provided. Rifles will be left at firing range. Rifles are not carried while skiing. Competitors may bring their own biathlon rifle, feel free to bring it — ski with own rifle or leave it at the firing range. Rangemaster will be Greg Young, who did a super job and kept everyone safe at the Picken Range Biathlon. Registration must be done in advance of event — there is no race day registration. Registration is limited by the Forest Service; enter early or you might be disappointed. There is no registration fee, but entrants must purchase a one-day $10 US Biathlon Association membership for liability insurance. Contact Rhonda Starr at

Eastern Sierra Nordic skiers compete in Masters World Cup Five Eastern Sierra Nordic Ski Association skiers competed in the recent Masters World Cup held March 1-7 in McCall, Idaho: Jonathan Bourne, Doug Will, Pat Armstrong, Carolyn Tiernan and Hank Garretson. Tiernan earned a bronze medal in the 10k freestyle, and skied the 30k in 1:28, earning another bronze medal. The Masters World Cup was also the US Masters. Tiernan earned medals in all three races and was crowned US National Champion for her age group. Full results are at www.summittiming.com/race_results/2008/world_masters_2008/.
Nordic skiers rally to support Tahoe coach Hudson ESNSA also made a recent contribution to the Scott Hudson medical fund. Hudson is South Lake Tahoe's Cross-Country team coach, whose house was completely destroyed last year by fire. Hudson was recently diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus. “The cross-country community is not large, but we stick together,” said ESNSA's Garretson of his Tahoe colleague.
