Easter weekend is making an earlier than usual appearance this year, moving up into March from its typical April seasonal berth. Mammoth is used to such scenarios and rolled with the changes like the colored eggs on the White House lawn in Washington, D.C.
Apart from its other religious significance, in North America the secular celebration, which heralds the pending arrival of springtime, is about renewal, with eggs and flowers, like the lily, symbolizing new life emerging after being dormant during winter. Revelers participate in the tradition of decorating Easter eggs on Saturday evening and hunting for them Sunday morning, by which time they have been mysteriously hidden all over the house and garden (or snowfield, as the case may be).
Similar to Santa Claus during Christmas, in North America, eggs and other treats are delivered and hidden by the Easter Bunny in an Easter basket, which children find waiting for them when they wake up. Many families in America will attend religious services in the morning, then participate in a feast or dinner party in the afternoon.
Easter in Mammoth Lakes is very much in keeping with that tradition, though with a few interesting differences tailored to our “neck of the woods.”

Kids Easter play day and egg hunt
Easter kicks off on Friday with Tourism and Recreation's Easter Play Day and Egg Hunt for kids, a fun, festive and free activity that's become something of an institution. On Friday, March 21, join the Easter Bunny and Tourism and Recreation staff from 3– 4:30 p.m. in the Mammoth Lakes Community Center on Forest Trail for springtime crafts and the annual community Easter Egg Hunt at 3:30 p.m. Bring a basket to fill with goodies. Prize eggs will be hidden for each age grouping, including toddlers through elementary school age.

Hop over to the Village at Mammoth
Here comes Peter Cottontail...follow him down the Bunny Trail to the Village at Mammoth for Saturday and Sunday, March 22-23, for Easter weekend festivities. Activities include games, everyone’s favorite amazing Petting Zoo and C.J. the Easter Egg Juggler on Saturday from 2-5 p.m., as well as a return engagement on Sunday morning. The Village's ever-popular Stories and S’mores will also feature a special Easter Edition on Saturday at 4 p.m.
Then, on Sunday, meet at the Village Fire Pits at 10 a.m. for a special Easter Egg Hunt for kids ages 6 and under, followed at 10:30 a.m. by the Village's famous Egg Hunt for kids 7-12 years old, who will hunt for some of the more than 3,000 Easter Eggs hidden on property, and of course the Easter Bunny!

Spend an Easter with the arts
Mammoth Lakes continues its expansion into the arts by welcoming two talented Krasners this Easter holiday.
March 22 at 4 p.m. piano prodigy Benjamin Krasner performs in the Village Stroll, between Gallerie Barjur and Panache. This 8-year-old up-and-coming musician was invited to play with the no less than the Moscow Orchestra this past summer and is a phenomenon in the making. Make sure you don't miss this young artist's performance!
Immediately following that, you won't want to miss this opportunity to meet Ben's mother, acclaimed artist Ann Krasner, in a special appearance along with examples of her  paintings, bronze and ceramics. A multi-talented, multi-disciplined artist, Krasner, a Russian immigrant who now calls Los Angeles home, sees humorous and whimsical aspect in any life situation and incorporates them in her art, through her use of bright colors and amusingly original, offbeat character renderings.
Her work has become popular in recent years, and has been shown in museums and galleries large and small the world over. In 2003, she was commissioned to create art that will be part of a 500-foot mural to be installed in the new World Trade Center building in New York City. Join Krasner from 5-7 p.m. for an artist reception in the Village's Gallerie Barjur and see many fabulous examples of Krasner's work.
Call (760) 924-1575 and visit www.villageatmammoth.com for further details and times.

Easter festivities at Mammoth Mountain
Spending Easter on Mammoth Mountain? No problem...Peter Cottontail's hopping up that way, too. Sunday, March 23, the Mountain will host kid-friendly activities and games to celebrate the holiday. The Easter Bunny and friends will make appearances at Canyon and Main Lodges, and both locations will have Easter Egg Hunts in the snow and snowmobile rides for the whole family. Drop by Canyon Lodge for face painting, toboggan rides and games, and stop by the Main Lodge in the afternoon for live music.
Events subject to change; conditions permitting. Call (800) MAMMOTH, (760) 934-2571 and visit www.mammothmountain.com for the latest details.

A 'cutting edge' Easter
Easter weekend is also your last chance to take advantage of the ice rink because it is scheduled to close on Easter Sunday, March 23. The rink is scheduled to try to be open on the following days and times: Thursday and Friday – Public skate 9:30 a.m.-noon and Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights – Public skate 6:30-9:30 p.m. Check www.visitmammoth.com for additional times.
Easter moves back to April next year [April 12], and won't put in another March appearance until 2013 [March 31]. -AG
