The hospital was recently awarded a three-year accreditation.SUBMITTED PHOTO/MAMMOTH HOSPITAL Mammoth Hospital last week announced it has been awarded a three-year term of accreditation in mammography as the result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Mammographer Debbie Cunningham was recognized by her peers for her dedication in the area of mammography. The ACR, headquartered in Reston, Va., awards accreditation to facilities for the achievement of high practice standards after a peer-review evaluation of the practice. Evaluations are conducted by board certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field. They assess the qualifications of the personnel and the adequacy of facility equipment. Cunningham graduated from Indiana University with an associate’s degree in radiological science, and also from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in radiography and mammography. She has been a radiology technician for more than 30 years, specializing in mammography.
Some of Cunningham’s work experience include supervising breast imaging centers in Indiana, Nevada and Illinois. In addition to being a clinical instructor for Nevada's University of Las Vegas Radiography Program, she was also an assistant at St. Rose Hospital Siena in Las Vegas, and manager of the MGM Hotel Medical Center, where she was also coordinator and lead mammographer. New digital mammography services have been available at Mammoth Hospital since fall 2007. Full-field digital mammography has recently gained FDA approval for the screening and diagnosis of breast cancer, touted by the medical profession to be the biggest advance in mammography in the last 20 years. This allows for earlier detection of breast cancer increasing chances of survival. The new digital mammography equipment reportedly allows for faster acquisition, fewer total exposures and less patient discomfort. Hospital spokesman Ehren Goetz said Cunningham has been instrumental in advancing Mammoth Hospital's diagnostic screening program.
