School budget cuts This question is for Mike DeRisi, Mammoth Unified School District Superintendent, and the school board. I have been reading with interest and dismay about the budget cuts in Mammoth Unified School District. I am wondering why the Charter School that benefits, say, 30 or so students and is losing money, has not been mentioned during this "belt tightening," while teachers are getting pink slips and all kinds of programs that benefit hundreds of students are being laid on the table for the ax? Charming June Lake Do we want June Lake to become just another town run by outside corporate interests who are proposing six story condo developments and current county supervisor Vicki Magee Bauer who heartily goes along with anything they want and ignore citizens concerns? We are at the crossroads of deciding what June Lake is to become but only if you act by May 19 (second homeowners) or May 27 (full-time residents). You have the power to ensure June Lake stays a charming and unique community affordable by the average family or become another congested, noisy, polluted and formula resort full of boring condo canyons affordable only to the upper elite. Weren’t we attracted to June Lake because of its beautiful simplicity? VOTE in the June 3 election either absentee ballot or in person for a new face on our currently pro-development Board of Supervisors. We need to get Dorothy Burdette on the board who has said she will listen to citizens and will require scientifically accurate data before commencing any development as well as adhere to current guidelines that protect the character of June Lake.
Register by May 19. If you live in June Lake full time and are not registered to vote, get a form at the post office and mail or deliver it to Mono County Clerk’s Office, PO Box 237, Bridgeport CA 93517. If you are a second homeowner, you can get do the same thing by getting a form at your local post office and mailing it to the Bridgeport office. Or, you can get a form on the Internet at either http://www.credomobile.com/registertovote/ or http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/elections_vr.htm and then mail it to the Bridgeport office. In the same envelope be sure to tell them you want them to mail you an absentee ballot. (Do not mail your voter registration to the Sec. of State in Sacramento or your local voter registration office. You may not get the ballot back fast enough to return it.) You will see on the form you are asked for your old address as well. They will take your name off your current polling place, but you can quickly reverse the procedure later in the summer to be able to vote at your current polling place in the November election. Remember that this is a power struggle between the average citizen and the big business interests who stand to make millions at our expense, despite what Bauer and her allies may be telling us. If this massive development was so good for a community, than why do we have all the massive problems in other California cities which cannot keep up with infrastucture costs because of mushrooming, ill-conceived growth. Don’t be fooled by people who tell you there are laws to keep California environmentally unharmed. There may be some laws but too many variances have been granted: just look at what happened to the California coast despite “protective” laws passed in the 1970s. Pat Bleha June Lake, CA Editor's note: According to the California Election Code, eligibility to vote exists in the county that is the person's domicile. While a person can have more than one residence, he/she can have only one domicile. Voter registration cards call for domicile, not business, mailing address or secondary address. It is a felony to falsify voter registration cards.
