As You Like It adds four more shows Theater patrons seem to really like Sierra Classic Theatre's production of William Shakespeare's comedy, As You Like It, which just completed its initial run of shows in the new Mammoth Lakes Art Center space. Ticket sales have been so good, MLAC Artistic Director Shira Dubrover announced Sunday that the production has added four additional performances, Aug. 30-Sept. 2, during Labor Day weekend. Dubrovner has been overwhelmed by the turnout, which has been brisk for all the dates so far, with locals and visitors alike generating lots of business at the box office. The company takes a short break while Showboat Youtheatre uses the space for its summer workshop, then resets the theater for the extended schedule. -MT
Hospital parcel All parties agreed last week that the Administrative Office of the Courts should purchase the parcel, on Sierra Park Road near the corner of Main Street, as originally designated in the master plan, and also agreed on a concerted effort for language providing assurances about the court building's design. The Forest Service said they intend to finalize the exchange by Sept. 30, the end of the federal fiscal year. -TOML

Water District: keep up the good work, Mammoth During the first two weeks of Level 1 Water Restrictions, the Mammoth Community Water District reports a very positive response from the community. Preliminary water production data show that overall demands in the community have dropped about 15 percent and demands on “No-Water Wednesdays” have dropped about 25 percent. August tends to be the month with the year's highest demands, which all means the measures and town participation appear to be working. Revisions to the Level 1 Water Restrictions were finalized at an adjourned meeting of the Board of Directors on July 25 and went into effect on July 30. Businesses and residences are currently required to follow a 3-day a week watering schedule and prohibited between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. No outdoor watering is allowed on Wednesdays. Hand watering may be conducted any day of the week, but not between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. No new grass may be installed and no more than five percent of turf areas may be replaced or reseeded. Hard surfaces such as sidewalks and parking areas may not be hosed down. Vehicle washing is allowed, but customers must utilize either a commercial car wash or a hose equipped with an automatic shut-off valve. -MCWD
Town extends Business Partner survey deadline The Town of Mammoth Lakes Tourism and Recreation Department last week extended the deadline to complete the Business Partner Communication Survey to Friday, Aug. 31. Launched in June, the survey is designed to determine the current satisfaction of information distributed by the department, along with determining the communication and marketing needs of the business community, and more accurately gauge occupancy. “We made the decision to extend the deadline to allow our business community more time during this busy period to complete this comprehensive survey,” stated Danna Stroud, Tourism and Recreation Director. Just under 70 surveys have been completed and the goal is to collect 100 percent of the lodging community and 50 percent of the local businesses. Respondents have so far indicated that they are “satisfied” with the relevance, content and timing of communication received from the Tourism and Recreation Department and listed community news and events, the projected average occupancy report and the events calendar as the most important information that they would like to receive on a weekly basis. The survey is available at www.visitmammoth.com/surveys/businesspartner. -TOML

Who’s in Town? Families still on summer vacation are still flocking to the area, with estimates for the Aug. 10-11 weekend down a little after Bluesapalooza, but not much, of just six points from the previous week to 73 percent. Midweek bookings also declined a slight six percent from the previous week's estimate, but still remained pretty strong for the time of year, with the Aug. 12-16 period projections coming in at 53 percent. –MT/T&R |
