Boxer and Feinstein seek Federal aid for California fires Senators Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein have written to the President requesting that the Administration immediately allocate additional resources to assist with ongoing firefighting efforts in California. Over the last month, nearly 1,800 fires have been reported in California and more than 688,000 acres have burned. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and President Bush declared a state of emergency in 11 counties in the state and crews are still working to bring under control more than 300 fires.
Fire restrictions put into effect locally Due to high fire danger, Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks instituted Stage 1 Fire Restrictions Friday, July 11. No wood or barbecue fires are permitted below 6,000 feet, except in designated campgrounds. Gas or propane stoves may be used at all elevations. No smoking below 6,000 feet is permitted except within a developed area, campground, enclosed vehicle or building which allows smoking. If further restrictions are necessary, the parks will make another public announcement.
Daily Flights to Mammoth Scheduled Horizon Air announced new daily nonstop flights from Los Angeles to the Mammoth-Yosemite Airport starting December 18, 2008 through April 12, 2009. The new daily service will run arrive and depart from Mammoth once a day. “We have worked long and hard to bring regularly scheduled air service to support tourism to our resort town,” said Town Manager Rob Clark. For a limited time, introductory fares of $79 each way are available for selected days in January 2009 while regular fares starting at $99 each way are already available at www.horizonair.com.
New EPA directory to aide climate initiatives The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced a new resource directory for local governments to use in developing and implementing climate change initiatives. The guide includes information on green landscaping, building construction requirements, improved recycling, water conservation and utilizing renewable energy. Same-Sex wedding events in Calif. SNC Grants Guidelines now available The Sierra Nevada Conservancy has posted the Proposition 84 Grants Guidelines and Grant Application Packets for the 2008/09 fiscal year. The grants are meant to fund watershed related projects (stream restoration, site improvements, water quality applications, etc...) as well as to assist with planning and education programs. Some local past recipients of the SNC Grants are the Mammoth Lakes Fire Protection District, the Town of Mammoth Lakes, and Mammoth Lakes Trails and Public Access. BLM accepting solar energy applications In response to public interest in solar energy development, the Bureau of Land Management announced it's plans to continue accepting application for future potential solar development on public lands. "We heard the concerns expressed during the scoping period about waiting to consider new applications," said BLM Director James Caswell, "and we are taking action. By continuing to accept and process new applications for solar energy projects, we will aggressively help meet growing interest in renewable energy sources, while ensuring environmental protections."
