SIMPLE TIPS FOR SUMMER LANDSCAPE CARE E-mail
Thursday, 31 July 2008
Exactly how many times a week should you irrigate? The Mammoth Community Water District encourages you to water only as much as your landscape needs. Over-watering not only wastes water by causing run-off, it can also damage your plants. One straightforward approach to watering grass and most other plants is to follow nature's pattern: apply enough water to penetrate deeply to plant roots, wait until the soil has almost dried out, and then apply water again. Remember, it is always better to irrigate once deeply than to irrigate two or three times shallowly.
Research has proven that the most important factor in irrigation is the time of day. The District only allows outdoor watering between the hours of 5 p.m. and 10 a.m. because more than 30 percent of the water used for irrigation at noon on a hot, windy day can be lost to evaporation. By waiting until the late evening to irrigate, when wind speed is lower and humidity is higher, water losses to evaporation are cut in half.
We all bear the burden of living in a state where water supplies are unpredictable. All residents should make an effort to conserve water, regardless of where they live in California.
For further information regarding water conservation please contact the MCWD conservation department during normal business hours at 934-2596 extension 282.
